ComfiSkin vs Amazon reviews

Amazon reviews tell you what strangers thought of a product on their own skin, assuming the reviews are real and belong to that product at all. ComfiSkin reads what’s actually in the bottle and tells you what it means for yours. Buy wherever you like.

The short answer

Amazon stars can be borrowed from other products, the tool people used to spot fake reviews has shut down, and a consumer group found likely counterfeits among the cosmetics it bought there. Even the honest reviews are about someone else’s skin.

What that means: five stars can mean nothing at all, and the bottle on your doorstep might not be the real thing. Buy wherever you like, but decide on what’s in it and whether it suits you. That’s what ComfiSkin tells you.

Stars can belong to a different product

The UK’s competition regulator spent years investigating fake reviews on Amazon. In June 2025, Amazon gave it binding commitments to tackle them, including what the regulator calls “catalogue abuse”: sellers attaching the reviews of a popular product to a different one, to make it look better than it is.1 So a five-star serum might have earned its stars as something else entirely.

The tools that used to protect shoppers are disappearing. In July 2025, Mozilla shut down Fakespot, a popular fake-review checker. Coverage of its closure cited a study estimating that about 43% of best-selling Amazon products had unreliable or fabricated reviews.3

And even an honest review is about someone else’s face. A cream that’s perfect for oily skin can wreck dry skin, and both camps leave five stars. Stars were built to sell more things faster, never to tell you whether something suits you. ComfiSkin starts from your skin type, your concerns, the ingredients you avoid and what’s already on your shelf.

What that means for you: the rating you’re trusting might have been earned by a completely different product, or by skin nothing like yours.

Some bottles aren’t the real thing

In July 2025, the consumer group Which? bought cosmetics from third-party sellers on several online marketplaces and compared them with the genuine products. Four of the 11 it bought on Amazon appeared to be counterfeit. Suspected fakes across the marketplaces included CeraVe, La Roche-Posay and The Ordinary. Amazon told Which? it has a zero-tolerance approach to counterfeits.2

A fake can still collect five-star reviews from people who never knew, and you can’t tell from a star rating what’s inside the jar. ComfiSkin shows you the real formula, so you know what the label on your bottle should say. And when you’re ready to buy, it shows which shops stock the product, cheapest first.

What that means for you: you could be putting something on your face that isn’t what the label says.

What to do when you buy skincare online

  1. Read the reviews, not just the stars. Check they actually describe this product. A review about a phone charger on a face serum is a red flag.
  2. Buy from the brand’s official store or a shop you trust where you can, especially for popular brands that get copied.
  3. Scan the product before you buy, and the label when it arrives. ComfiSkin tells you whether it suits your skin and shows what the real formula should be.
