ComfiSkin vs Brandefy

Brandefy started as an app for comparing expensive products with cheaper dupes. Today it mainly sells its own skincare, and its app is a shop. ComfiSkin compares any product with what you already own, and sells nothing.

The short answer

Brandefy built its audience comparing other brands’ products, then launched its own skincare. Its own products are now “99% of the company’s revenue”, and the app is a shop for them, though its App Store title still says “Reviews”. Its 4.9-star rating is built largely on reviews from its dupe-comparison years, and its App Store label lists identifiers used to track you.

What that means: the “dupe” advice now comes from a company selling its own dupes. ComfiSkin sells nothing, so when it compares products, it has no favourite.

From comparing dupes to selling them

Brandefy launched in 2018 as a dupe-comparison app, earning from affiliate links and a monthly box of free brand products.3 It launched its own skincare, and its own products are now “99% of the company’s revenue”, according to an interview with its founder.2 Its current App Store listing invites you to “start shopping”.1

There’s nothing wrong with selling affordable skincare. But an app that tells you which product is the best dupe, while selling its own dupes, has an obvious answer in mind. ComfiSkin has no products, so its comparisons start with what’s already on your shelf.

What that means for you: the best dupe in Brandefy’s app is likely to be Brandefy’s. The best one in ComfiSkin may be the one you already own.

A rating from a different app

Brandefy’s App Store rating is 4.9 from about 11,000 ratings. Its 50 most recent US reviews go back to April 2021, so much of that rating was earned when it was a dupe-comparison community, not a shop. When we checked, 12 of those 50 gave one or two stars, including “I don’t even see any dupes”.6

What that means for you: the stars you see were mostly given to the app Brandefy used to be.

What to do if you use Brandefy

  1. Treat its comparisons as a shop recommending its own products.
  2. Check your shelf before buying a dupe. You may own something that already does the job.
  3. Compare any product with what you own in ComfiSkin, free, with no products to sell.
