The short answer

OnSkin is a weekly subscription dressed up as a skincare app. At its top price you’d pay about $415 a year to read ingredient labels. Recent reviewers say they can’t even get past the paywall to try it, and the app tracks your location and purchases for advertising.

What that means: it’s built to bill you, not to help you. If you’ve got an OnSkin trial running, cancel it today. ComfiSkin does the same job for free.

Weekly billing is designed to look small

OnSkin sells “Weekly Premium Access” at prices from $4.99 to $7.99, including a weekly plan that starts with a free trial.1 Weekly pricing exists for one reason: it makes a big number feel small. $7.99 doesn’t sound like much until it’s been taken 52 times. That’s $415 a year, more than most people spend on the skincare itself.

And you may not even get a look before paying. When we checked, 17 of the 50 most recent App Store reviews gave one or two stars.2

Another reviewer found the same product listed several times with different ratings.2 So you can pay every week for results that don’t agree with themselves. ComfiSkin has no subscription at all. Scanning, explanations, routine checks and reminders are free, so there’s nothing to start, renew or forget to cancel.

What that means for you: a small weekly charge is designed to feel like nothing, right up until you read your bank statement.

Your skin is one more funnel

OnSkin is made by AIBY, an app studio whose other apps include a chatbot, a plant identifier, a coin identifier, a horoscope app and a calorie tracker.1 Making lots of apps isn’t a crime. But when the same weekly-subscription model runs through a studio’s whole catalogue, the subscription is the product. Skincare is just the way in.

ComfiSkin only does skincare, and has no subscription to protect. It earns your trust by being useful, not by being hard to leave.

What that means for you: OnSkin looks built to sell subscriptions first and help your skin second.

It tracks you, and tells two different stories

On the App Store, OnSkin lists six kinds of data used to track you across other companies’ apps and websites, including your purchases, location and identifiers.1 On Google Play, it says it shares no data with third parties, while also listing your approximate location as collected for advertising.3 Tracking helps an app like this find its next subscriber. The mismatch means you can’t be sure which account is true.

ComfiSkin shows no ads and has nothing to track you for. Your skin profile, shelf and notes stay on your phone.

What that means for you: the app tells the two app stores two different stories about your data. ComfiSkin doesn’t need a story, because it doesn’t collect it.

What to do if you’ve tried OnSkin

  1. Check whether you’re still paying. On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments and subscriptions.
  2. Never pay weekly for something you’ll use for months. It’s the most expensive way to pay for any app.
  3. Scan your products in ComfiSkin instead. Same job, no charge, no trial.
