ComfiSkin vs CosmEthics

CosmEthics is a Finnish ingredient scanner that has quietly drifted away from ordinary users: its Android app has disappeared from Google Play and its iPhone app hasn’t been updated since 2023. ComfiSkin is free, current, and built for the people using it.

The short answer

CosmEthics’ Android app returns “not found” on Google Play, even though its own website still links to it. The iPhone app hasn’t been updated since 1 December 2023, it puts its harmful-ingredient checks behind a Premium subscription, and 8 of its 12 US App Store reviews gave one or two stars. The company now mainly sells white-label tools to retailers.

What that means: you’d be paying for an app its own maker seems to have moved on from. ComfiSkin is free, works on iPhone and Android, and is actively looked after.

An app its maker seems to have left behind

When we checked, CosmEthics’ Android app returned “not found” on Google Play in the US, Finland, the UK and Germany, though the company’s website still links to it.2 On iPhone, the app was last updated on 1 December 2023, and the listing’s copyright still reads “2014 - 2022”.1 The company itself now focuses on selling ingredient tools to retailers to put in their own apps.4

An app that isn’t updated falls further behind every month: new products missing, new phones unsupported, bugs never fixed. Reviewers have noticed.

“The app literally doesn’t work. Can’t scan and or find anything.”
App Store review, May 20253

What that means for you: you could install it, pay for it, and find it simply doesn’t work. ComfiSkin is actively maintained, on both iPhone and Android.

The safety check is the paid part

CosmEthics lists Premium at €4.99 a month or €19.99 a year, renewing automatically.1 Reviewers say the most basic question, whether an ingredient might be harmful, is what you’re asked to pay for.

“Have to pay in order to see if products ingredients are harmful or not.”
App Store review, February 20253

Charging people to find out whether something might hurt them is the wrong way round. In ComfiSkin, every ingredient is explained, your avoid list is checked and your verdict is shown, all free.

What that means for you: with CosmEthics, the answer you need costs extra. With ComfiSkin, it’s the first thing you see.

What to do if you use CosmEthics
