The short answer

SkinCarisma is funded by Google ads and a cut of what you buy through its links, it’s run by a team that won’t say who they are, and it gives everyone the same generic analysis no matter what their skin is like.

What that means: the site makes money when you buy, and it doesn’t know your skin. ComfiSkin earns nothing from your purchases and answers for you.

Ads on the page, a cut at the till

SkinCarisma’s homepage carries Google’s advertising code. We counted seven references to it.1 Its About page asks visitors to buy through the retailers listed on the site, because “for every purchase we receive a tiny kickback”. The same page says it’s run by a small team who prefer to stay “behind the scenes”, and names no one.2

Follow the money. A site paid by ads wants you on the page longer. A site paid by commissions wants you to buy. Neither is the same as wanting you to choose well. And with no names behind it, you can’t tell who’s deciding what you read. ComfiSkin has no ads and no commissions, so “you don’t need this” is always a possible answer.

What that means for you: a site that earns when you buy has every reason to keep you shopping.

An analysis of a list isn’t an answer for you

On SkinCarisma, you paste an ingredient list and get an analysis of that list, the same one anybody would get. Whether it suits your oily T-zone or your sensitive cheeks is left for you to work out.

ComfiSkin starts from you. Scan the barcode or photograph the label in the shop, and the answer reflects your skin type, your concerns and the ingredients you avoid. It also warns you when a new product doubles up with something you own, and checks your week for clashes.

What that means for you: with SkinCarisma, you still have to work out on your own whether the product suits your skin. With ComfiSkin, that’s the answer you get.

What to do if you use SkinCarisma

  1. Remember that shopping links earn the site money. That doesn’t make the analysis wrong, but it’s worth knowing.
  2. Look for an answer about your skin, not just a list of what each ingredient is.
  3. Scan the product in ComfiSkin to see whether it suits you, with nothing in the way.
