Check whether you have the wash or the gel
Benzoyl peroxide comes as both a gel wash and a gel that stays on the skin. Wash and leave on gel have different directions, despite sharing enough words to make shopping unnecessarily interesting. The steps below are general benzoyl peroxide wash guidance; follow your Acnecide packet for the exact strength, amount and frequency. Some products are for the face only, while others also treat the chest and back.1
How to use Acnecide face wash
- 1Wash your hands.
- 2Wet the affected skin.
- 3Wash gently with a small amount of gel wash for 1 to 2 minutes, unless your packet gives different directions.
- 4Rinse thoroughly with water and pat your skin dry.
- 5Wash your hands afterwards.
For a first use, general benzoyl peroxide guidance advises trying a small amount on one or two small affected areas for three days. If there is no reaction or discomfort, continue as directed. Start with once daily to see how your skin reacts; benzoyl peroxide is generally used once or twice daily. Do not increase beyond the packet or prescription directions. If choosing between strengths, start with the lowest available strength.12
If you forget a use, use it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next one. In that case, skip the missed use and continue your usual schedule. Do not double the amount to catch up. More medicine or more frequent washing is not a shortcut to faster results.12
Which spots can it help?
Benzoyl peroxide treats mild to moderate acne. A benzoyl peroxide wash is an option for small inflamed bumps, called papules, and pimples containing pus, called pustules. For blackheads and whiteheads, a retinoid such as adapalene helps unclog pores, while benzoyl peroxide wash reduces acne bacteria. Get a pharmacist or doctor to check before combining treatments. Deep, painful lumps called nodules or cysts need a dermatologist's help because they can leave permanent scars. Do not rely on a face wash alone for these.123
What belongs in the rest of your routine?
General acne care means washing gently twice daily, removing makeup at the end of the day and avoiding scrubbing. That does not mean using medicated wash twice daily before your skin tolerates it. Choose skincare and makeup labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Noncomedogenic describes pore clogging, not an entire skincare personality, which is more than one label needs to accomplish. Do not pick or squeeze spots: doing so can cause scars. Avoid abrasive cleansers and products containing alcohol or other ingredients that dry or irritate the skin.24
Use sunscreen and avoid sunbeds, sunlamps and prolonged sun exposure because benzoyl peroxide increases sensitivity to sunlight. Keep the wash away from eyes, mouth, hair and coloured fabrics. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and fabric.12
Can you use it with other acne treatments?
Benzoyl peroxide is most effective alongside a treatment that tackles other causes of acne. A clinician can combine it with a retinoid or antibiotic, sometimes in a single medicine. When a topical antibiotic, meaning an antibiotic applied to skin, is prescribed for acne, benzoyl peroxide helps reduce antibiotic resistance: bacteria becoming less responsive to the medicine. If you already use a prescription acne product, check the treatment plan before adding Acnecide. Some combination medicines already contain benzoyl peroxide. Use each prescribed product exactly as directed rather than assembling an extra treatment yourself.5
How long does it take to work?
Benzoyl peroxide usually starts working around four weeks, with effects becoming noticeable over four to six weeks. Acne treatment plans often need six to eight weeks before fewer breakouts are visible. Those are general treatment timelines, not a promise of clear skin from this particular wash. If there is no improvement at four to six weeks, contact your doctor for advice; persistent spots at six to eight weeks also warrant a treatment review. Seek advice sooner if acne worsens, and do not leave unimproved acne beyond 12 weeks without review.1235
What side effects should you watch for?
Dryness, peeling, redness and hot, itchy or painful skin are common side effects. Mild irritation often improves after a few days or with less frequent use. Ask a pharmacist or doctor if symptoms bother you or persist. For sensitive skin, the small area trial and gradual start are especially useful precautions. Do not apply benzoyl peroxide to infected skin, cuts or grazes.1
Stop using benzoyl peroxide and seek immediate medical advice for burning, blistering, marked swelling or a rash. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue. If the wash gets into your eyes, rinse with plenty of water.12
Who should check before using it?
Benzoyl peroxide is generally suitable from age 12; younger children need medical advice. Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide or a product ingredient. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about medicines and supplements you take. If pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, check before use. Benzoyl peroxide can usually be used during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, avoid applying it to the breasts.12
See a GP if you have many spots, deep or painful spots, scarring, or acne affecting your mental health. Hot, swollen skin can signal infection and also needs assessment. A GP can offer prescription treatment or refer you to a dermatologist rather than leaving you to keep switching washes.4
