Caffeine is the practical choice if you want to try a daily cosmetic treatment. Retinol is an option if you are willing to wait months for a possible small change. Neither is a good match if your goal is permanent removal; the word "cellulite" on a jar is not a signed removal contract.12

Why a cream has limits

Cellulite involves the structure of skin and the tissue underneath, rather than simply a rough skin surface. Fibrous bands, meaning strands of connective tissue, tether skin inward while fat beneath the skin pushes outward. The balance between those forces contributes to dimpling. Skin thickness and the arrangement of the bands also matter. A surface cream is a fairly small intervention for a problem with its own internal architecture.3

Cellulite affects an estimated 80% to 90% of women after puberty and commonly appears on the thighs, buttocks and hips. It can occur at a low or normal body mass index, not only at a higher weight. Its causes are complex and not fully understood. Treatment remains difficult, and improvements with many treatments are short lived.3

What results can you expect from caffeine?

In a 2026 trial, volunteers applied a specially formulated 2% caffeine cream containing lanolin to one upper thigh and a placebo cream to the other, twice daily for 12 weeks. Average cellulite scores fell from 3.96 to 2.50 with the active cream and from 3.88 to 2.83 with the placebo. Both thighs improved, with a larger change on the caffeine side. The active cream produced a moderate effect, rather than complete clearance.4

The finished formula matters, not just the caffeine percentage. In laboratory testing, that lanolin containing nano cream delivered more caffeine through skin than a commercial cellulite product with the same caffeine concentration. A nano cream is a formulation designed to improve delivery into the skin. Treat the tested cream as a specific example, rather than a reason to assume every 2% caffeine cream performs identically.5

Some marketed cellulite products contain 3% to 7% caffeine, while clinical work has also used concentrations of 1% to 2%. Choosing the highest percentage alone misses the role of the formulation. A larger number on the packaging is easier to compare than skin delivery, which is convenient for the packaging.5

How to try a cellulite cream

  1. 1Test the cream on a small area first.
  2. 2Wait 48 hours. If there is no skin reaction, use it over a larger area.
  3. 3For caffeine, keep up daily application to maintain any improvement.
  4. 4For 0.3% retinol, allow six months or longer before judging whether it helps.

Which ingredients need extra caution?

Cellulite creams can cause allergic reactions. Do not expand application if the small area test causes a reaction. Avoid aminophylline if you use an asthma inhaler: even topical use can cause breathing problems. Aminophylline products have also been linked to anxiety and a racing heart.1

What if you want a longer lasting change?

A dermatologist who treats cellulite can discuss procedures that target the fibrous bands beneath the skin. Laser treatment with Cellulaze has reduced the appearance of cellulite for a year or longer. Subcision, which uses a small needling device to release the bands, can produce results lasting up to two years. These are cosmetic procedures, not permanent cures.2

Dry brushing, massage guns, foam rollers and spa treatments are not reliable substitutes for a lasting treatment. Any visible smoothing from many home or spa approaches lasts only several hours. Exercise can help the appearance of cellulite by increasing muscle mass and improving blood flow, but it does not make cellulite permanently disappear.2
