What is the difference?

If your night cream is your moisturizer, its job is to add moisture; occlusive moisturizers also form a surface layer that slows water loss. A sleeping mask's formula may do some of the same work, but its name alone does not tell you that, as if the product name skipped the job interview. LANEIGE describes its own sleeping mask as designed for overnight hydration, but the word 'sleeping' tells you the schedule, not whether the product has taken over moisturizer duty.23

How should you use a sleeping mask?

  1. 1Check the exact product label for when to apply the mask and how long to leave it on. Follow those directions rather than guessing from the product name.
  2. 2Cleanse first. If you use a skin medication or other treatment, apply it right after cleansing, then follow your usual moisturizer step.
  3. 3Only drop night cream if the specific product directions say the mask is used in place of moisturizer. Otherwise, keep moisturizer in your routine.
  4. 4Avoid layering products by reflex. Dermatologists warn that too many products can irritate skin, and a mask with active ingredients you already use can add dryness and irritation.

What should you expect?

Facial masks can give an immediate visible boost, but the effect can be temporary.5

If dryness is the reason you use night cream, keep a moisturizer unless the mask clearly serves that role. Moisturizers add moisture, and slightly dry skin may need only a light moisturizer at night.2

If you use prescription or nonprescription skin medicine, check the mask's ingredients before layering it. Some medicines change skin thickness or make skin more sensitive, which can clash with mask ingredients.5

When should you stop using it?

Wash the mask off if you feel itching, burning, or stinging. If your skin feels worse after using a mask, see a board certified dermatologist.1
