Can facial eczema disappear for years?
Atopic dermatitis, often called atopic eczema, has flares and remissions: periods when symptoms improve or disappear entirely. Many children improve as they get older, and some lose their symptoms before their teenage years. Others have eczema into adulthood. Childhood eczema can also disappear and return years later, often in a milder form. Adults can develop atopic eczema for the first time, including around the eyes.23
Is there a cure for eczema on the face?
There is no known cure for atopic eczema because genetic, immune system and environmental factors contribute to it. Treatment controls inflammation and helps the skin retain moisture. No cream can permanently cure atopic eczema, even if its packaging looks ready to accept an award. Avoidance diets do not cure it either; do not change your diet unless a doctor advises you to.245
Facial eczema can mean atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis, among other types, and the treatment depends on which you have. A dermatologist can assess the rash and arrange allergy patch testing when needed. Identifying an avoidable trigger can improve control, but a recurring rash needs the right diagnosis rather than repeated product swaps.136
How should you care for facial eczema?
- 1Wash with an emollient soap substitute rather than soap. An emollient is a moisturizing treatment. Use warm water and keep baths or showers to 5 to 10 minutes.
- 2Apply a fragrance free cream or ointment while your skin is still damp. These are generally better for dry eczema than lotion.
- 3Moisturize at least twice daily, including morning and bedtime, and again when your skin feels dry. Continue even when the eczema looks clear.
- 4Choose fragrance free products rather than unscented ones, which can contain masked fragrance. Test new skincare on a small patch inside your arm daily for 7 to 10 days before wider use.
- 5Avoid your known triggers, such as irritating makeup, soaps or dry air. Keep cool and avoid scratching, which damages the skin and increases infection risk.
Read product labels carefully, because the front of the bottle is usually auditioning for a sales job. For a moisturizer left on the skin, choose a formula with few ingredients and avoid fragrances and sodium lauryl sulphate, which can irritate dermatitis.4
What if moisturizer is not enough?
A clinician can prescribe a topical steroid to control a flare. Facial skin needs lower potency steroids, with the strength and duration chosen for the affected area. Do not move a stronger body eczema treatment onto your face without medical advice. Tacrolimus or pimecrolimus are alternatives for sensitive areas, including eyelids, particularly when lower potency steroids are ineffective. They do not cause skin thinning, but can cause temporary warmth, burning or itching. Follow your prescription's directions for amount and frequency.7
How long does clearing take, and when should you get help?
A facial flare can take several weeks to clear with treatment. See a clinician if symptoms worsen or fail to improve after several weeks. Stop a moisturizer that causes a new reaction and seek advice, especially for rash or pain. Ask your prescriber about reactions to medication.14
Get urgent medical help for blistering, crusting, leaking fluid, pus, pain, swelling, warmth, sudden worsening or spreading, fever, or feeling generally unwell. These can indicate infection, including eczema herpeticum, a potentially serious viral complication.5
