What does combining them offer?

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative used to improve uneven tone, pigmentation and texture. Bakuchiol is a plant derived ingredient, commonly extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Babchi plant. Bakuchiol can help address fine lines, dark spots and skin laxity, meaning loss of firmness, and is generally gentler than retinol.123

There is promising research on a combined formula containing bakuchiol, retinal, Vigna aconitifolia extract and other ingredients, including niacinamide and melatonin. Retinal is another vitamin A derivative, not another spelling of retinol: retinal takes one conversion step to become active retinoic acid, while retinol takes two. Treat that combined formula as a specific option, rather than assuming any two separate products will deliver its results.4

How should I fit both into my routine?

  1. 1Choose a low strength retinol. Start with the least intense formula you can find rather than increasing strength to compensate for adding another ingredient.
  2. 2Introduce retinol every other night. Build up slowly as tolerated, and use moisturizer to help limit irritation.
  3. 3Put bakuchiol in the morning if you want to keep the products separate. Bakuchiol can be used once or twice daily, but that does not mean a routine containing retinol needs two daily bakuchiol applications.
  4. 4Layer by product type. Apply a bakuchiol serum before moisturizer, or a bakuchiol cream after other serums. There is no specific retinol first or bakuchiol first sequence supported for separate products here.
  5. 5Use daytime sun protection. Apply sunscreen to uncovered skin, seek shade and use protective clothing. Keep retinol for nighttime use.

What percentages should I choose?

There is no settled percentage pairing for separate bakuchiol and retinol products. For retinol, choose the lowest strength available; some products do not disclose their percentage. The combination research included 0.1% retinal in laboratory testing, but that is not a starting dose for retinol. A percentage is useful information, not a competition the bottle needs to win.24

How long will results take?

The combined retinal formula produced improvements in firmness, elasticity, wrinkle count and evenness of tone within 28 days of nightly use in an open label clinical study, meaning participants knew what they were using. That timeline belongs to the complete formula, which contained several active ingredients. For a separate bakuchiol and retinol routine, there is no reliable combination specific deadline or proven amount of extra improvement. Retinoid benefits develop gradually, so increasing strength is not a shortcut without a tradeoff in irritation.4

Who should be careful, and when should I stop?

Bakuchiol can still cause irritation or allergic reactions. Retinol can cause dryness, itching and burning, so do not treat bakuchiol as protection against retinol side effects. If the routine causes irritation, stop pushing through it and ask a dermatologist about adjusting the products. People with skin allergies, substantial dryness, redness or inflammation should get advice before adding retinol. In darker skin, irritation can trigger dark marks, making a slow introduction and moisturizer particularly useful.12

If you already use a prescription retinoid or other active skincare, discuss adding bakuchiol with your prescriber. Bakuchiol is not an established replacement for prescription retinoids. If your goal is acne treatment and your spots are deep, painful, causing scars or not improving with self treatment, see a doctor rather than adding more cosmetic products.15

Can I use the combination during pregnancy?

Do not use retinol or other retinoids during pregnancy, including products that also contain bakuchiol. Bakuchiol's safety during pregnancy remains uncertain, so discuss bakuchiol alone with your healthcare provider before using it. If you are trying to become pregnant, tell your obstetrician and dermatologist about your medications and prescription skincare so they can update your treatment plan.126
