Can I use COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid with retinol?

Why the combination needs care

COSRX markets the liquid for blackheads, clogged pores and oil control, which is a job description rather than a request to recruit an entire skincare department. Its formula includes betaine salicylate, willow bark water and niacinamide. Retinol also helps prevent clogged pores and exfoliates skin. Adding an exfoliant to retinol therefore adds overlapping work, along with another potential source of irritation.34

How to fit both into your routine

1. 1Introduce one product first. Before starting retinol, test a small amount on a small area of skin. Check for redness or itching over the next couple of days before using it on your face.
2. 2Start retinol slowly at bedtime. Follow your product's directions; general guidance is to begin every other night or once every few days. Choose the lowest strength available rather than starting with the strongest formula.
3. 3On retinol nights, cleanse gently and pat your skin dry. Apply a thin, pea sized amount across your face, avoiding your eyes, nose and mouth, then finish with a moisturizer that does not clog pores.
4. 4If you add COSRX BHA, reserve a separate night for it. Apply after cleansing, in the toner or essence step, and let it absorb fully before the next skincare step. Follow with moisturizer.
5. 5Keep sunscreen in your daytime routine. Retinol increases sun sensitivity, and COSRX specifically requires sunscreen when its BHA liquid is used during the day.

COSRX suggests using the liquid two to three times weekly and building up gradually according to skin condition. Treat that as its standalone direction, not a quota to fill around retinol. Exfoliation frequency should depend on how your skin responds. Separate nights still require care: retinol can leave skin more sensitive or peeling between applications.12

What results should you expect?

Retinol can improve clogged pores, uneven texture and fine lines. It comes in creams, lotions and serums, so a different bottle format is not a different career. Visible improvements take several weeks, and wrinkle improvements usually take several months. Breakouts can continue during the first couple of months. There is no reliable combined results timetable here, so do not increase exfoliation just because retinol has not produced a visible change yet.45

Who should be more careful?

COSRX positions this liquid for experienced acid users. Dryness, sensitive skin or skin allergies make adding retinol and an exfoliant a less suitable starting point. In darker skin tones, irritation can trigger dark marks. If your product is prescription tretinoin or another prescription retinoid rather than cosmetic retinol, ask your prescriber before adding the BHA liquid.235

Pause exfoliation if your skin becomes red and irritated; do not add more BHA to peeling, burning skin. Never exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts. If irritation persists, or you already have substantial redness or inflammation, see a dermatologist before continuing the combination.25

Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. COSRX also advises avoiding its BHA liquid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, discuss retinol with your healthcare provider before using it.345
