Why keep them separate?
The toner contains 7% glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that removes dead surface skin cells. It targets uneven texture and dullness, which is a more useful job description than simply being another bottle.1
Retinol increases skin cell turnover, helping old cells shed and newer cells replace them. It also helps reduce fine lines by slowing collagen breakdown. Collagen is the protein that gives skin structure and support. Retinol can irritate skin, especially when you first start using it or have sensitive skin. Adding an exfoliating acid to the same session adds irritation risk rather than a reason to layer them.12
How should I use them?
- 1Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.
- 2On a glycolic acid evening, apply the toner to your face and neck with your fingers or a cotton pad. Avoid the eye area. Do not rinse.
- 3On a separate retinol evening, apply your retinol following its own directions.
- 4Finish with moisturizer.
The Ordinary advises beginners to start the toner two to three times weekly and increase gradually as tolerance develops. Once daily is its maximum stated frequency, ideally in the evening, not a target you need to reach while also using retinol.1
Keep the rest of the routine simple, rather than turning the bathroom shelf into a project with no closing date. Use a gentle cleanser instead of rough scrubs. Check your moisturizer for additional retinol or exfoliating acids so you are not unintentionally doubling up.2
How long does retinol take to work?
Expect improvements from regular use of an over the counter retinol in about three months. If retinol irritates your skin, a thin layer of moisturizer before retinol can provide a buffer. That adjustment is for retinol use, not permission to add glycolic acid to the same evening.2
When should I skip the toner?
Do not use this toner on sensitive, peeling or damaged skin. Patch test before use. If skin or eye irritation occurs, rinse thoroughly, stop using the toner and consult a doctor.1
Glycolic acid can increase sun sensitivity and sunburn risk. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure during use and for one week afterwards. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for daily use.12
