Should I start with twice a day?
No. If vitamin C is new to your routine, begin every other day, then move to daily use if your skin tolerates it. This is general guidance, not a fixed schedule for every serum: different vitamin C formulations have different strengths and effects. Twice daily application has helped reduce acne lesions in clinical trials, but that does not make twice daily use necessary for a routine aimed at dark spots or fine lines.2
Why choose the morning?
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it helps counter unstable molecules called free radicals that damage skin. Morning application puts it alongside sunscreen, where the two work together to improve protection against sun damage. Vitamin C does not replace sunscreen. Nighttime use is also an option, but morning use gives the serum a useful place in a basic daily routine.13
How to apply vitamin C serum
- 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
- 2Apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to your face and neck. If you use toner, apply the serum after it.
- 3Apply moisturizer after the serum.
- 4Finish your morning routine with broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it before makeup and 15 minutes before going outdoors.
What if I already use retinol or exfoliating acids?
If you already use a retinoid, a vitamin A based skin treatment, a practical routine is vitamin C in the morning and the retinoid before bed. You do not have to add a second serum application to an evening routine that already contains treatment. Mixing vitamin C with chemical exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids can disturb skin's pH balance. Using one serum at a time keeps the routine simpler, rather than turning the bathroom shelf into a scheduling problem.34
Strength and formula matter too
For L ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C, concentrations of 10% to 20% are commonly used. Sensitive skin should start with a lower concentration; concentrations above 20% risk serious irritation. A well formulated serum also needs to stay stable and reach the skin effectively. Some vitamin C products contain too little antioxidant or do not absorb well. Not every vitamin C product performs alike, even when the packaging gives the ingredient top billing. Choose dark or tinted packaging because vitamin C is sensitive to sunlight, heat and light.125
How long should I give it?
Allow about three months of consistent use to see noticeable effects. Vitamin C can help improve dark spots and signs of skin aging, including fine lines. Take a photo without makeup before starting, then another once a month to compare progress. Keeping the same routine gives you time to judge progress, even if the skincare aisle would prefer a weekly plot twist.145
When should I stop?
Mild tingling can occur, and possible side effects include dryness, itching and redness. Do not increase frequency while your skin is irritated. Stop an irritating product; if you have substantial discomfort or irritation, consult a doctor. If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient, consider a patch test or speak with your doctor before using the serum.12
