Can tea tree or lavender oil help?

Tea tree and lavender essential oils have properties that may help reduce inflammation. Tea tree oil has also been explored for its ability to kill microscopic mites involved in rosacea inflammation. That makes symptom relief a possibility, not a cure. Essential oils and other facial oils are not interchangeable treatments, so a possible benefit from tea tree oil is not a reason to assume every plant oil treats rosacea.2

Research into complementary treatments for skin conditions is limited, and many studies have weaknesses in how they were designed. There is no good reason to replace an effective rosacea treatment with an oil simply because the oil is marketed as natural.4

Essential oils are potent and need proper dilution before facial use. Speak to a dermatologist before trying them rather than improvising a dilution. Rosacea skin can already burn or sting with water and skincare, and peppermint and eucalyptus oil are among the ingredients people with rosacea have reported as irritants.125

How should you test a new product?

Choose products marked fragrance free and made for sensitive skin, rather than treating the botanical artwork as an ingredient list. Look for noncomedogenic products, meaning products designed not to clog pores. Avoid fragrance, menthol, camphor and exfoliating acids such as glycolic acid and lactic acid.256

  1. 1Apply the product to a patch about the size of a quarter on the inside of your arm each day for 7 to 10 days.
  2. 2If the skin stays clear, begin using the product on your face. This is general skincare testing advice, not permission to apply undiluted essential oil.
  3. 3If a product causes a reaction, stop using it and record its ingredients in a rosacea diary.

What should you use instead of chasing a cure?

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen form the skincare part of treatment, which leaves the bathroom shelf with very little casting to do. Adding more products increases the chances of irritation. Frequent product changes can also worsen symptoms, so avoid cycling through oils and remedies whenever a flare appears.257

  • Cleanse up to twice daily with a mild cleanser and your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry.
  • Moisturize daily after cleansing, even if your skin feels oily. Moisturizing helps reduce irritation and improve comfort.
  • Apply broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily. Look for zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both.
  • Avoid scrubbing and exfoliation. Keep a symptom diary to identify triggers such as sunlight, heat, alcohol or particular skincare products.

What works, and how long does it take?

Treatment depends on the symptoms. Azelaic acid, ivermectin and metronidazole are options for inflammatory bumps and pimples. Prescription medicines can temporarily reduce persistent redness, while laser or light treatments can address visible blood vessels. Topical treatment for bumps can show slight improvement in 3 to 4 weeks, with a noticeable difference usually taking 2 to 3 months. Do not abandon prescribed treatment for an oil while waiting for improvement.37

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you have rosacea symptoms or skincare changes are not controlling them. Other conditions can look similar, and untreated rosacea can worsen. Seek urgent medical care for a painful, red or gritty eye, blurred vision or sensitivity to light. These can signal inflammation of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, which needs urgent treatment.1
