Why can a new routine cause spots?

Acne starts when oil and dead skin cells block pores. Oil in products applied to your skin can contribute to that blockage. Irritation can also trigger acne or worsen existing acne. Adding several exfoliating acids is another way to overdo a routine: excessive exfoliation can strip away structures that keep water and healthy fats in your skin. More exfoliating products do not make a routine more useful, however impressive the shelf looks.123

Not every reaction is acne. Itchy, scaly patches, burning or swelling can be a contact reaction to cosmetics. Weak irritants can take days or weeks of repeated use to cause symptoms. A new lip balm can also cause inflamed lips, with dryness, scaling and itching. Hormone changes and some medicines can cause acne too, so a breakout after a purchase does not automatically identify the purchase as the cause.456

How many products should I introduce at a time?

Introduce one product at a time and leave the rest of your routine unchanged while you assess it. The same principle applies when removing a suspected culprit: change one thing at a time. Changing the whole routine turns a useful test into a product lineup where every bottle has an alibi.1

Before using a new product across your face:

  1. 1Choose a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow.
  2. 2Apply the normal amount twice daily for seven to 10 days.
  3. 3Leave the product on for its usual contact time. For a cleanser, use five minutes or the time specified in its instructions, then rinse.
  4. 4If there is no redness, itching or swelling after that testing period, begin using the product as directed.

How do I find which product caused a breakout?

For suspected product related acne, remove one suspected product for two weeks and watch whether you get fewer new breakouts. Improvement is a clue that the product was contributing. Removing several products together makes that clue harder to interpret. Include moisturizers and makeup in your check, not just acne treatments. Look for products labelled noncomedogenic, meaning less likely to clog pores, and fragrance free.1

How long should I wait before adding another skincare product?

Allow seven to 10 days for the small area test before starting regular use. Keep introducing products individually afterwards: irritation from weaker irritants can appear only after days or weeks. For a breakout investigation, use the separate two week removal window. Neither window is a deadline for acne to clear; inflammatory acne can take several months of skincare and treatment to improve.1247

Keep the routine gentle while you assess it

Wash twice daily with a gentle cleanser, remove makeup at night and avoid scrubbing or squeezing spots. If your new product is glycolic acid, start once or twice a week at night and increase only if your skin tolerates it. Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily when using facial acids. Sensitive skin needs particular care with retinol and glycolic acid because both can irritate.367

When should I stop or get help?

If a test causes a skin reaction, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help soothe the area. See a dermatologist for a severe reaction that does not settle, or for recurring irritation that needs allergy patch testing. Seek medical help for deep, painful spots, scarring, signs of infection, or acne that is not improving with self care.67
