Which combinations need separating?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Different peptides have different jobs, and their performance depends on the finished formulation. A shared ingredient category is not a shared instruction manual, however convenient that would make the bathroom shelf.12

The Ordinary recommends keeping its peptide products separate from L ascorbic acid because the acidic environment can increase peptide breakdown and reduce effectiveness. That restriction is not limited to copper peptides. Medik8 describes its peptide formulas as compatible with vitamin C, but also says to separate copper peptides from vitamin C. Check the actual product directions rather than assuming all peptide serums follow one rule.12

How to use both without layering them

  1. 1In the morning, wash with a gentle cleanser, then apply vitamin C serum. Apply toner before the serum if you already use one.
  2. 2Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Vitamin C adds antioxidant protection alongside sunscreen; it does not replace the sunscreen step.
  3. 3In the evening, cleanse and apply your peptide serum before moisturizer. Follow the peptide product's directions for the amount and frequency.
134

For example, The Ordinary Multi Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum goes after cleansing and before moisturizer. The brand directs a few drops morning and evening when used without conflicting products. If vitamin C occupies your morning routine, keep this copper peptide serum in the evening instead. The same serum also has restrictions on retinoids and direct acids, so evening placement does not make every other combination compatible.5

How to layer compatible formulas

When the formulas allow the combination, apply serums after cleansing, working from thinner to thicker textures, then apply moisturizer. A compatible peptide moisturizer can follow a vitamin C serum. Finish a morning routine with sunscreen. Texture helps decide application order; the product's compatibility instructions decide whether the combination belongs there at all.1

What should you expect?

Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection, supports collagen, the protein that gives skin structure, and helps fade dark spots. Certain peptides target the appearance of fine lines, firmness and texture. Choose the peptide formula for the concern you want to address, not simply because the label contains the word "peptide". Vitamin C generally takes about three months to show visible effects; peptide timing depends on the product and concern. Neither ingredient turns a morning routine into an instant renovation.234

Formulation also matters for vitamin C itself: L ascorbic acid is unstable when exposed to oxygen, and some products do not penetrate skin sufficiently to make a difference. Choose packaging that protects vitamin C from light rather than a clear bottle or wide opening jar. Avoid duplicating the same active across several products when a complementary routine would address your needs.36

What if your skin is sensitive?

Patch test new peptide products before full application and introduce them gradually. Vitamin C can cause dryness, itching or redness; sensitive skin should start with a low concentration of L ascorbic acid. More than 20% increases the risk of irritation. For The Ordinary copper peptide serum, test a small amount on a clean upper forearm, keep the area dry and rinse after 24 hours. Do not use it if redness, burning, itching, blisters or irritation develops. If irritation occurs during facial use, rinse, stop using the serum and consult a doctor.145
