Does toner clean your face?
Yes, as an extra step after cleansing. Toner can pick up residue your cleanser missed, particularly if you did not remove makeup first. That is different from using toner as your only wash. Depending on the formula, toner also adds hydration or helps smooth skin texture. A hydrating toner and an acid toner are different products, despite sharing a name.13
Toner is optional, even if a matching set of bottles makes the omission look administratively serious. If your goal is simply clean skin, start with a gentle cleanser rather than adding a toner to do the cleanser's job.3
What should you use to clean your legs?
Use a cleanser suited to your skin, especially if your legs are dry or sensitive. Washing removes excess oil, unpleasant odours, sunscreen and dirt. Water alone does not remove all oily dirt effectively: a cleanser contains surfactants, ingredients that loosen oil and dirt so water can carry them away. This is why wiping skin with a watery product is not the same task as washing it with a cleanser and rinsing.2
How to wash your face and legs
- 1Remove facial makeup first if you are wearing it. A makeup remover can lift makeup that a cleanser does not fully remove.
- 2Wet your skin with lukewarm water. Apply a gentle cleanser with your hands and massage gently rather than scrubbing.
- 3Rinse thoroughly, then gently pat your skin dry with a towel. Do not rub.
- 4If you use facial toner, gently swipe or spray it onto your clean face before moisturizer. Facial toner generally does not need rinsing.
- 5Apply moisturizer to your face and legs while the skin is still damp to help trap water in the skin.
Wash your face before bed, and limit routine facial washing to twice a day plus after sweating. Repeated washing is not a better cleaning strategy: excessive washing removes the skin's protective oil film and can leave skin dry and irritated. For your legs, wash gently rather than repeatedly scrubbing an area that still feels dry or rough.24
Which toners need more care?
If your skin is dry, avoid alcohol containing toners and choose a mild cleanser. Some modern toners contain hydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid instead. Sensitive skin needs particular care with heavily fragranced formulas. If you use prescription skin treatments, follow their directions rather than assuming an extra toner belongs in the routine.156
Introduce new products one at a time. For sensitive facial skin, try a pea sized amount behind your ear along the jawline and wait a day or two before applying it across your face. Stop using a product that causes irritation, and ask a healthcare provider about unusual skin symptoms.3
How often should you use toner?
Facial toner can be used once or twice daily if tolerated. For strong acid formulas, start every other day. Longer term changes in skin appearance generally take six weeks to three months and can be subtle; removing leftover residue is a separate purpose from those slower changes.1
A basic routine centres on cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection. Adding unnecessary products can increase costs, which is an expensive way to give the bathroom shelf a job. Apply sunscreen to skin not covered by clothing, including exposed legs.4
