Which Bag Balm formula does this cover?

This answer covers the US Bag Balm Skin Protectant formula with 84.3% petrolatum, plus benzethonium chloride, lanolin, paraffin wax and purified water. Match those details to your container rather than assuming every Bag Balm product has the same formula or directions. Bag Balm explicitly includes lips among its uses, so the name is doing a poor job of narrowing the brief. The ointment also protects against the drying effects of wind and cold weather.1

How should you use it on your lips?

Bag Balm's directions say to apply as needed. The following routine combines that instruction with general care for chapped lips; it is not a separate Bag Balm dosing schedule.1

  1. 1Apply the ointment to the outside of your lips when they feel dry. Bag Balm is for external use only, and you should keep it out of your eyes.
  2. 2Reapply after eating or drinking, when balm or ointment needs replacing.
  3. 3Apply a tolerated lip balm or ointment before bed and when you wake up. A thick ointment helps keep lips hydrated overnight.
  4. 4Before going outdoors, use a nonirritating lip balm labelled SPF 30 or higher, preferably with zinc oxide or titanium oxide. Reapply that sunscreen balm every two hours outdoors.

Keep lip balm somewhere accessible so you can use it when dryness starts. A bag, nightstand or car can all be useful places to keep lip balm, so the product gets a more convincing home than the back of a cupboard. Do not deliberately swallow Bag Balm; if swallowed, its label directs you to get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.14

Who should choose something else?

Avoid this formula if you have a known lanolin allergy. Lanolin reactions can cause redness, itching, swelling or blisters hours to days after application, even after a product was previously tolerated. People with existing dermatitis, including eczema, or damaged skin are more likely to become sensitised to lanolin. Allergic contact dermatitis means skin inflammation caused by an allergic reaction to something touching the skin.56

For very dry, cracked lips, plain white petroleum jelly is a straightforward alternative. Petrolatum can soothe chapped lips, and a thick ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils. Choose a fragrance free, nonirritating product. Stop any lip product that causes burning, stinging or tingling: those sensations mean irritation, not that the product is working.27

What should you expect?

Regular use of a tolerated balm or ointment should ease discomfort while lips heal. General chapped lip care usually brings noticeable improvement within two to three weeks; that is not a Bag Balm specific recovery time. Avoid licking, biting or picking your lips. Saliva evaporates and leaves lips drier, while picking and biting add irritation that can prevent healing. A bedroom humidifier can help when dry air or mouth breathing at night contributes to the problem.23

When should you stop and see a doctor?

Follow Bag Balm's shorter stopping rule: stop use and ask a doctor if the condition worsens, symptoms last more than seven days, or symptoms clear and return within a few days. Seek care for sores that will not heal, or frequent bleeding that does not improve with home care. Persistent dryness can have causes other than weather, including allergy, infection or a medication reaction, so repeatedly coating the lips is not always the right treatment.12347
