What does each ingredient do?

Bakuchiol is a plant extract used as a gentler alternative to retinol. It may help smooth skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. Laboratory research also found effects on collagen and other proteins that support skin structure. Bakuchiol is not a substitute for prescription retinoids when you need treatment for a specific skin problem.13

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps skin hold onto moisture by supporting its protective barrier. It can calm inflammation and improve uneven pigmentation. For oily skin, niacinamide may also reduce oil production. Treat the pair as two ingredients with separate jobs, not a collaboration that needs its own launch event.24

How do you layer them?

For a routine using a bakuchiol serum and a separate niacinamide product:

  1. 1Cleanse gently.
  2. 2Apply the bakuchiol serum before your moisturizer.
  3. 3Apply your moisturizer.
  4. 4Apply niacinamide after your moisturizer, or combine a niacinamide serum with the moisturizer and apply them together.
  5. 5Wear sunscreen during the day.

If your bakuchiol product is a cream rather than a serum, apply it after other serums. Niacinamide can already be part of a moisturizer or sunscreen. Avoid stacking several niacinamide products at once, because the bathroom shelf does not need duplicate departments.12

Can you use both every day?

Both ingredients can be used once or twice daily. Bakuchiol can be applied in the morning and evening, so it does not have to be reserved for bedtime. Sensitive skin calls for a slower start with a low concentration of niacinamide; most products contain 5% or less. If a niacinamide gel causes excessive dryness with twice daily use, reduce it to once daily or every other day.124

How long do results take?

Think in weeks, not applications. A 2% niacinamide moisturizer reduced oil production over four to six weeks in a clinical trial. Improvements in wrinkles were reported after eight weeks with a 4% niacinamide cosmetic, while a 5% formula improved several signs of aging over twelve weeks. These are useful expectations for niacinamide, not a timetable for the combined routine.4

Who should be careful?

Both ingredients are generally well tolerated, but gentler does not mean irritation is impossible. Bakuchiol can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Niacinamide can occasionally cause itching, redness or mild burning. Before introducing niacinamide, apply a small amount to your forearm and wait 24 hours to check for a reaction. Stop the new product if irritation develops rather than continuing through it.12

If you have a skin condition or use other active treatments, ask your dermatologist about adding bakuchiol. During pregnancy, discuss bakuchiol with your healthcare provider before using it: its pregnancy safety remains uncertain. Neither ingredient replaces sunscreen, and niacinamide does not prevent sunburn.14
