Is body scrub good for your face?

Exfoliation is optional, not a compulsory extra credit assignment for your cleanser. A scrub is mechanical exfoliation: it physically removes dead surface cells. Whether that is useful depends on your skin type. Oily, thicker skin can suit mechanical exfoliation, while dry, sensitive or acne prone skin can find it too irritating. A mild chemical exfoliator, which dissolves dead cells rather than rubbing them away, is another option.2

How do you use a face and body cleansing scrub?

For a scrub intended for facial use, these are general exfoliation steps:

  1. 1Apply gently using small, circular motions for about 30 seconds. Do not press hard or scrub vigorously.
  2. 2Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, not hot water.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer immediately afterward, because exfoliation can dry the skin.

There is no single scrub schedule for every face. Frequency depends on your skin type and the exfoliation method; more aggressive exfoliation needs to happen less often. A daily face washing routine is not a daily scrub routine.2

When should you skip a scrub?

Never exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds. Be careful if you use prescription retinoids, retinol or benzoyl peroxide: adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or trigger breakouts. Avoid strong mechanical exfoliation if you have darker skin or develop dark spots after skin injuries, because aggressive exfoliation can increase pigmentation. Stop scrubbing if your skin becomes red or irritated.2

What should you use on your face instead?

Use a gentle cleanser without alcohol. Wet your face with lukewarm water and apply the cleanser with your fingertips. Washcloths, mesh sponges and other tools can irritate facial skin. Rinse with lukewarm water, then pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy, and handle the delicate eye area gently. Wash once in the morning, once at night and after heavy sweating. If you have concerns about irritation or whether exfoliation suits your skin, see a dermatologist.1

What does body scrub do?

Body scrub removes dead cells from the skin's surface. Those cells can contribute to dullness, uneven appearance and clogged pores. Removing them can leave a smoother, more even texture, which is a smaller job than the word "renewal" likes to suggest. Too much exfoliation can cause sensitivity or irritation, so a smoother surface is not a reason to keep scrubbing.3
