Shampoo is designed for hair and scalp, which is a fairly literal job description for a bathroom bottle. Good hair cleansing removes enough oil and dirt to leave hair clean without leaving it dry, frizzy and difficult to manage. Cleaning power alone is not the whole job: conditioning also affects how hair feels and combs afterward.2

When should you stick with shampoo?

Stick with a suitable shampoo if your hair is dry, dyed, permed or damaged. These hair types benefit from milder cleansing and conditioning rather than maximum oil removal. Sebum, the natural oil made by your skin, also protects the hair shaft and acts as a natural conditioner. Removing every trace of oil is not the goal.25

Traditional soap is a separate case, not a synonym for every liquid body wash. Traditional soap can leave soap scum in hard water that is difficult to rinse from hair. Switching between cleansing products therefore involves more than comparing how much they foam.2

How should you wash your hair?

For your usual shampoo routine:

  1. 1Wet your hair and scalp with warm or cool water, rather than hot water.
  2. 2Spread a coin sized amount of shampoo between your palms.
  3. 3Massage gently into your scalp for about 30 seconds.
  4. 4Rinse thoroughly. An oily scalp can need a second wash.

Lather helps distribute cleanser, but does not directly clean hair. A larger cloud of lather does not mean better cleaning, despite its excellent qualifications for a shampoo advert. Thorough rinsing matters because leftover shampoo can accumulate around hair follicles and contribute to spots along the hairline.3

You do not have to wash your hair every time you shower. Every other day is a general starting point, with more frequent washing for oily hair and less for dry hair. Fine or straight hair and oily scalps can need daily shampooing; coarse, curly or coily hair should be washed when needed. The schedule follows your hair and scalp, not the shower schedule.46

What should make you stop?

Stop using a cleanser that causes redness, itching or swelling. Harsh cleansing and overwashing can strip surface oil and leave the scalp dry and prone to irritation. A rash around the hairline or behind the ears can also indicate a reaction to a hair care product.3

If flakes persist despite regular washing, use a dandruff shampoo and follow its bottle directions, including any time it needs to sit before rinsing. Do not replace that treatment with ordinary body wash. See a dermatologist if dandruff is severe or does not improve with appropriate shampoo use.4

Can you use face wash as body wash?

A gentle face cleanser is a reasonable body cleansing option as general guidance. For sensitive skin, focus soap on the face, armpits and groin rather than automatically soaping every inch. Choose a fragrance free cleanser because fragrance can dry and irritate skin.16

Can you use shampoo as face wash?

Choose a gentle skin cleanser rather than making shampoo your regular face wash. Shampoo is formulated for hair and scalp, and its cleansing agents and fragrance can cause irritation. A shampoo that suits your hair is not automatically the right cleanser for your face.36
