When can you restart retinol?

Use your clinician's aftercare plan to decide. Microneedling makes tiny holes in the skin and starts a healing response. Redness, swelling, burning or tightness can continue after the appointment, so being able to resume everyday activities is not a reason to restart retinol. Returning to work and returning to every product in your bathroom are different decisions, despite sharing the word "return".34

Ask for a specific restart date, whether you should use your usual strength, and how often to apply it when you resume. If your skin is still uncomfortable at that point, contact the clinic before restarting. General recovery times describe healing, not a retinol schedule.2

What should you use while retinol is paused?

  1. 1Follow the immediate aftercare instructions you were given. Some scar treatment protocols use only a prescribed cooling gel for the first 24 hours; other clinics apply moisturiser immediately. Use your own clinic's plan rather than combining both.
  2. 2Keep the treated area clean. If your plan follows the cooling gel protocol, switch to a simple moisturiser after the first 24 hours and apply it three to four times daily.
  3. 3Stay out of the sun while your skin heals. Follow your clinic's instructions about sunscreen; scar aftercare can include avoiding sun exposure for seven days and continuing sunscreen on the scars.
  4. 4Confirm when makeup, exercise and other skincare can return. Makeup waiting times range from 24 hours to 72 hours across treatment plans. Scar aftercare can also require avoiding hot water, saunas, swimming and sweaty exercise for 72 hours or until swelling and bleeding resolve.

What does normal recovery look like?

Treated skin can look red or darker than usual and feel sunburned, with minor burning or swelling. These reactions usually settle within a few days to a week. Dryness or flaking can also occur and improve with moisturiser. Use the aftercare cream your clinician recommends rather than treating peeling as a reason to add another active product.23

Microneedling stimulates collagen production, so the procedure is doing something even when the serum shelf is off duty. Visible improvement develops gradually over weeks, with fuller results taking several months.2

Should you stop retinol before microneedling too?

Your preparation plan can include stopping retinoids, the family that includes retinol and tretinoin, for a few days beforehand. Cleveland Clinic advises stopping Retin A and exfoliating products such as salicylic acid one week before treatment. If you use prescription tretinoin, get instructions for that medicine specifically, including when to resume it.24

Does a home roller change the answer?

Home devices are not equivalent to professional microneedling. They generally produce less noticeable results, but overuse can irritate skin, and devices that pierce the skin can cause infection or scarring. Do not assume a home roller makes immediate retinol use appropriate; seek medical advice if the treatment has injured your skin.5

When should you contact the clinic?

  • Contact your healthcare provider if bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours.
  • Contact your healthcare provider if the treated area develops blisters or remains swollen for longer than a week.
  • Contact your treating team if you suspect an infection or a wound has formed.
