The Foaming formula details below refer to the US Foaming Facial Cleanser; Canada sells SA Cleanser, while the UK product is called SA Smoothing Cleanser. Check your bottle's ingredient list before buying a replacement, because the name is not a formula freeze agreement.245

Which should you pick?

Foaming is the straightforward choice if your skin gets oily but you do not need an exfoliating step. Its ceramides help maintain the protective skin barrier, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture, and niacinamide may help calm skin. SA adds exfoliation rather than simply providing a more enthusiastic wash, which is useful because foam is not a ranking system.14

If your skin is mostly dry or easily irritated, do not choose either cleanser just because it foams. Dry and sensitive skin often suits a moisturizing cream or lotion cleanser better. Sensitivity can occur alongside oily or combination skin, so oiliness alone is not a reason to add exfoliation.6

How do you use them?

  1. 1Wet your face with lukewarm water. Hot water can irritate skin.
  2. 2For Foaming Facial Cleanser, massage gently in circular motions as the gel foams. For SA Cleanser, follow the directions on your local bottle. Do not scrub to intensify exfoliation.
  3. 3Rinse Foaming Facial Cleanser well and pat dry.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer after cleansing. During the day, use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
13

Foaming Cleanser can be used morning and evening. For SA, start every couple of days and alternate with a milder cleanser suited to your skin type. Increase toward once or twice daily only as tolerated. These are general salicylic acid cleanser frequency guidelines, not a substitute for your bottle's directions.67

Will SA help blackheads and visible pores?

Salicylic acid can unclog pores, so a cleanser containing it may help when clogged pores are the concern. Cleansing also reduces surface oil, which can make pores less noticeable. That makes SA a more targeted choice for congestion than a cleanser focused on oil removal alone. Persistent acne often needs more than salicylic acid; a cleanser is not a complete acne treatment.3

What if SA dries or irritates your skin?

Reduce exfoliating cleanser use rather than pushing through dryness or irritation. One option is a mild cleanser in the morning and salicylic acid cleanser before bed. Tightness, flaking and increased sensitivity can signal that a cleanser is disrupting your moisture barrier. If you are unsure whether exfoliation suits your skin, a dermatologist can help you decide.36
