Hydrating Cleanser does not foam, so bubbles are not part of its job description. Cream and lotion cleansers generally have a rich, silky feel and are useful options for dry skin. Foam is a texture difference, not a reason to assume that Cream to Foam is unsuitable for dryness: CeraVe includes both products among its cleansers for normal to dry skin.124

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick Hydrating Cleanser for dry or very dry skin when you prefer a non foaming texture, or want one cleanser for your face and body.
  • Pick Hydrating Cream to Foam Cleanser for normal to dry skin when makeup removal and a foaming wash are your priorities.
  • For sensitive skin, prioritise a gentle, fragrance free cleanser and your response to it rather than the amount of lather.
125

CeraVe includes both among its single step cleansing options for normal to dry skin. Cream to Foam is specifically highlighted for makeup removal, but that does not mean Hydrating Cleanser cannot remove makeup.2

How should you use either cleanser?

Use these general cleansing steps with either product, rather than treating them as product specific label directions.

  1. 1Use lukewarm water. Hot water can strip natural oils and leave facial skin dry or red.
  2. 2Cleanse gently with circular hand movements. Include your neck if you have applied makeup there, and avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly so cleanser residue is not left on the skin.
  4. 4Gently pat with a clean, dry towel, then apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp.
25

CeraVe's general routine uses cleansing twice daily, which can fit morning and evening. For tweens and teens with dry or sensitive skin, washing once in the evening can be sufficient. For dry skin, use enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil without working up a thick lather. Neither texture calls for aggressive scrubbing.256

What if your skin is sensitive?

Introduce one new product at a time. If your skin is sensitive, try a small amount before using a new cleanser across your whole face. Tell a dermatologist if skincare causes burning, stinging or irritation, or if dryness continues despite gentle cleansing and moisturising.56

Which is better value?

CeraVe's US catalogue lists Hydrating Facial Cleanser at US$15.99. Compare local prices for the same bottle size before choosing on cost; that US price is not a UK price comparison. Check the ingredient list on the bottle you are buying, because CeraVe updates its formulas. The US Hydrating Facial Cleanser lists glycerin, three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate, alongside cetearyl, stearyl and cetyl alcohol.3
