What does the cream do?

CeraVe describes the UK SA Smoothing Cream Pot as fragrance free, with salicylic acid, 10% urea and three essential ceramides. Salicylic acid loosens dead skin cells, urea attracts and retains moisture, and ceramides help protect the skin barrier. The cream combines moisturising and exfoliating in one product, so the bathroom shelf does not need a separate department for each.13

CeraVe describes the texture as rich but non greasy, a useful distinction for a cream that still has to coexist with clothes. Its MVE delivery system releases moisturising ingredients over 24 hours.13

Who is it useful for?

The clearest fit is dry body skin with a rough texture, including skin prone to keratosis pilaris. Keratosis pilaris means keratin, a protein in skin, builds up inside hair follicles and forms small bumps. It is harmless and does not need treatment unless the dryness, itch or appearance bothers you. Moisturising creams containing urea or salicylic acid can help soften skin and loosen the scale around follicles.1456

How should you use it?

  1. 1Wash with a mild cleanser and warm rather than hot water. Avoid hard scrubbing, which can worsen keratosis pilaris.
  2. 2Apply the UK cream liberally to the body after showering. CeraVe directs application as often as needed, without specifying morning or evening.
  3. 3For keratosis pilaris, apply moisturiser while skin is still damp, within five minutes of bathing.
  4. 4Follow the directions on your own pack. Stop the exfoliating product for a few days if skin becomes too dry or irritated.

For keratosis pilaris, general moisturising advice is to apply a cream at least two or three times a day and whenever skin feels dry. That is not an instruction to apply an exfoliating cream more often than its label allows. If your dermatologist has prescribed an exfoliating medicine, use the amount and frequency they specify rather than treating every product as an extra opportunity to exfoliate.26

How long does smoothing take?

For keratosis pilaris, assess progress over weeks, not after a single shower. If your treatment plan produces no improvement after four to six weeks, tell your dermatologist. Some people need to try several treatments before finding one that works. Treatment controls keratosis pilaris rather than curing it, so maintaining smoother skin usually means continuing a suitable routine, sometimes only a few times a week.26

What should you be careful about?

The US SA Cream for Rough & Bumpy Skin is a different formula, described with salicylic acid and lactic acid. Its directions include stopping for irritation or burning. Its alpha hydroxy acid warning calls for sunscreen, protective clothing and limited sun exposure during use and for a week afterwards. Follow that warning if you have the US product.7

Do not assume every patch of bumps is keratosis pilaris. Other conditions can cause similar dryness and itching. Contact a healthcare professional if symptoms concern you or persist; persistent bumps despite home care are also a reason to see a dermatologist.56

What is CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream 177ml?

SA Smoothing Cream is CeraVe's exfoliating body moisturiser for dry, rough skin. For a pack labelled 177ml, check its own ingredient list and directions rather than assuming it matches the UK pot or US cream. CeraVe updates ingredient lists, so the packaging is the reference for the product you actually have.1
