What is in CeraVe Skin Renewing Cream Serum?

The formula combines encapsulated retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and three essential ceramides. Retinol targets visible signs of aging; hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture; niacinamide supports the skin barrier; and ceramides help maintain that protective barrier. CeraVe's MVE delivery system releases moisturizing ingredients over time. The product comes in a 1 fl oz size and is fragrance free. The name includes both cream and serum, because apparently one skincare category was not enough.1

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It increases skin cell production, helps prevent clogged pores and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines. These are general retinol benefits, not a promise that this particular cream will clear acne. Think of the product as a treatment with moisturizing support, rather than choosing it solely as a basic moisturizer.2

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Test a little on a small area first. Wait a couple of days to check for redness or itching before adding retinol to your routine.
  2. 2At bedtime, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat your face dry. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Apply a thin layer. General retinol guidance uses about a pea sized amount for the face; CeraVe tells you to apply small dots where needed and gently smooth until absorbed. Keep the product away from your eyes.
  4. 4Follow with a facial moisturizer that does not clog pores. Retinol can cause dryness even when the treatment contains moisturizing ingredients.
  5. 5The next morning, cleanse, moisturize and finish with sunscreen. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.

CeraVe permits use alone or under makeup once or twice daily. For a new retinol user, general guidance is to begin every other night for the first couple of weeks, or once every few days if needed, and increase gradually as tolerated. Bedtime is the practical starting point: general routine guidance places retinol after cleansing at night, before moisturizer. Twice daily is not a starting requirement.123

How long does it take to work?

General retinol use takes several weeks to produce visible improvements in the look and feel of skin, and changes in wrinkles usually take several months. Skin can initially look worse while adjusting. Retinol works on a longer timetable than the word renewing would prefer. Do not increase the amount or frequency just because a few applications have not changed your fine lines.2

Who should be careful, and when should you stop?

CeraVe positions Cream Serum for all skin types and describes it as noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Sensitive skin and allergy prone skin still need caution with retinol. Possible effects include dryness, redness, peeling, itching or burning, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. An alternative ingredient can be a better choice if retinol is too irritating.12

If irritation occurs, wash the product off and consult a physician. Stop using it if tingling lasts or becomes unpleasant. If the product gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Contact a healthcare provider for hives, a severe rash or extreme swelling, especially of the lips or tongue.14

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak with your healthcare provider before using retinol. Many prescription skincare products are also unsuitable during pregnancy or nursing. Tell the clinician managing your skincare if pregnancy is possible, rather than treating an over the counter purchase as automatic permission to use it.24

What can you use with it?

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are the useful supporting products. Introduce fewer new products at once, and avoid adding several serums or exfoliating products together: more products increase the chance of dryness and irritation. A crowded routine gives irritation more suspects and fewer useful answers. If you use a vitamin C serum, morning is its usual routine slot, while retinol goes at night. Vitamin C supports sun protection but does not replace sunscreen.3

If you already use prescription skincare, keep the cleanser and moisturizer gentle. Avoid adding an over the counter treatment aimed at the same condition without discussing the combination with your prescriber. Prescription products often contain stronger doses and can cause dryness, peeling or stinging. If over the counter care has not helped, a dermatologist can discuss prescription options; adding more products is not the only next step.4

What is CeraVe Skin Renewing Day Cream?

The US Skin Renewing Day Cream is a different product: a morning moisturizer with encapsulated retinol and broad spectrum SPF 30, plus hyaluronic acid and three essential ceramides. Its sunscreen ingredients are octinoxate 7.5% and zinc oxide 10.5%. CeraVe lists it at US$27.99 and positions it for all skin types. It belongs at the moisturizing and sun protection stage of the morning routine, rather than the nighttime treatment stage.5

Apply Day Cream liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours. Use a water resistant sunscreen when swimming or sweating. Limit sun exposure, particularly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and use protective clothing, hats and sunglasses. General bedtime retinol advice does not replace this particular product's morning sunscreen directions.5

What is the difference between face serum and face cream?

Layer products from thinnest to thickest: a lightweight serum generally goes before a heavier moisturizing cream. The active ingredients and directions matter more than the category name. CeraVe's Skin Renewing products are not interchangeable just because they share those words.3

ProductMain ingredients and purposeDirections
Skin Renewing Super Boost SerumA lightweight, milky serum with niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin B12, LHA and ceramides for visible aging concerns and hydration.Apply one to two pumps to face and neck after cleansing, morning and night, then moisturize.
Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum, Canadian formulaA lightweight serum with 10% pure vitamin C, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 for brightness and more even looking tone.Apply evenly to face and neck daily, avoid the eye area, and store in a cool, dark place.

Super Boost is an alternative for someone seeking a milky hydrating serum rather than a retinol treatment. It contains LHA, or lipohydroxy acid, which gently exfoliates, and CeraVe positions it for all skin types, including sensitive skin. The Canadian Vitamin C Serum is the more directly brightness focused option. Its protective packaging helps prevent oxidation; keep it cool and dark rather than displaying it somewhere sunny.67
