What does the Clinique balm contain?
The original has nine listed ingredients, including safflower seed oil, which helps dissolve makeup. Essential oils are aromatic plant substances; a plant oil in an ingredient list does not automatically mean an essential oil. Clinique lists the original for all skin types, including sensitive skin and sensitive eyes. The solid balm turns into a silky oil during application, so its commitment to being solid ends at the jar.12
Take The Day Off Charcoal Cleansing Balm is a separate formula with charcoal powder, aimed at oilier skin. The shared product name is doing less organising than you might reasonably expect. Do not substitute the charcoal version without checking its own full ingredient list for essential oils.34
How do you check another balm?
Look for a fragrance free label, then read the complete ingredient list. 'Unscented' is not equivalent: a product can contain fragrance used to mask the smell of other ingredients. Botanical ingredients also deserve a closer look rather than an automatic pass. Common essential oil names include tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, orange, lavender alternatives such as neroli, and lemongrass. Neroli can appear as Citrus aurantium flower oil; peppermint can appear as Mentha piperita oil.256
If you have a confirmed allergy, check for your specific allergen rather than stopping at the essential oil check. Fragrances are the most common cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis, but preservatives and other ingredients can also cause reactions. An allergy can develop after years of using a product without trouble. Avoiding essential oils addresses one possible trigger, not every possible cause of irritation.5
How do you use the original balm?
Use the balm when you need to remove makeup or sunscreen, especially at the end of the day. It dissolves waterproof eye makeup as well as face makeup; the intended result is removal during cleansing, not a treatment effect that requires weeks.1
- 1Start with dry hands and dry skin, and scoop a small amount.
- 2Massage the balm over your face with your fingertips.
- 3Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.
- 4Follow with your usual cleanser if double cleansing, then continue with treatment products.
If you have rosacea, favour fragrance free, mild cleansers and avoid rubbing, scrubbing or massaging your skin. Use fingertips gently and rinse completely, because leftover cleanser can irritate. A balm that calls for massage should not override that gentler approach; ask your dermatologist for a suitable cleanser if finding one is difficult.7
Test a new balm before using it on your face
- 1Apply your normal amount to a quarter sized spot on the underside of your arm or elbow bend twice daily for seven to 10 days.
- 2For a cleanser, leave it on for five minutes or as long as its instructions specify, then rinse.
- 3If no redness, itching or swelling develops during that period, begin using the product.
When should you stop or get help?
If a reaction develops, gently wash the balm off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve the skin. Essential oil allergy can cause itching, redness and scaling, often appearing 24 to 72 hours after exposure rather than immediately. Home testing does not identify the responsible allergen; medical patch testing can help do that.26
See a doctor for persistent, recurring or severe symptoms. Contact dermatitis can also cause blisters, dryness and cracking; on darker skin, affected areas can look dark brown, purple or grey rather than red. If the cause remains unclear or symptoms do not respond to treatment, further assessment by a dermatologist can help.4
