The UK SPF 25 Sheer Hydrator, US Sheertint Hydrator Broad Spectrum SPF 25 and US Broad Spectrum SPF 28 Sheer Hydrator are different products. Clinique has given several different products nearly the same name, so the number and the word Sheertint are doing more administrative work than expected.134
Which Moisture Surge are you looking at?
| Product | Formula and finish | Size and listed price |
|---|---|---|
| UK Moisture Surge SPF 25 Sheer Hydrator | Lightweight cream with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera bioferment and provitamin D. Blends sheer without a white cast. | 30 ml for £29 or 50 ml for £45. |
| US Moisture Surge Sheertint Hydrator Broad Spectrum SPF 25 | Tinted moisturiser with hyaluronic acid and activated aloe water. Sheer coverage, natural finish and seven shades. | 1.4 fl oz for US$47. |
| US Moisture Surge Broad Spectrum SPF 28 Sheer Hydrator | Separate cream with aloe bioferment and provitamin D. Sunscreen actives are avobenzone 3%, homosalate 7%, octinoxate 7% and octisalate 4.5%. | The principal package is 50 ml. Price is not listed on its drug label. |
Choose the UK Sheer Hydrator if you want a moisturiser that blends clear beneath makeup. Choose the US Sheertint if you want hydration plus a little colour in the same application. Sheertint offers sheer coverage rather than a full coverage finish, so the word tint is not quietly volunteering to become foundation.56
What is in the UK SPF 25 formula?
The UK cream combines two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid with aloe vera bioferment to help attract and retain moisture. The bioferment contains lactobacillus, activated aloe water and aloe extract powder. Provitamin D helps defend against environmental stressors. The ingredient list also includes glycerin, dimethicone and sodium hyaluronate. Its sun filters include homosalate, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl salicylate and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane. Check the ingredient list on your own package, because formulas can change.1
What should you expect on your skin?
The UK cream starts opaque and becomes sheer as you massage it in. The intended finish is lightweight, smooth and naturally glowy rather than heavy or greasy. Clinique's clinical testing found an immediate hydration increase in all 24 women tested and an immediate glow increase in all 27 women tested. Expect hydration from application rather than a treatment that needs weeks to start working. The product is designed to sit under makeup; that is its routine role, not a promise that every makeup combination will behave identically.5
How do you apply it?
- 1Use the UK SPF 25 cream in your daytime moisturising routine before makeup. For sunscreen protection, apply 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- 2Start in the centre of your face at the highest points. The opaque appearance helps you see where the cream has gone.
- 3Pat or massage outward over your entire face, continuing until the cream becomes fully sheer. Use enough for complete coverage rather than a few isolated dabs.
- 4Protect other exposed skin too, including your ears, neck and hairline. Keep sunscreen away from your eyes and mouth.
- 5Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours outdoors. For swimming or sweating, choose a water resistant sunscreen and follow its reapplication directions.
Is SPF 25 enough?
For your sunscreen choice, look for SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum protection and water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays; SPF mainly describes protection against sunburn from UVB. SPF 25 provides sun protection, but does not meet that SPF 30 threshold. If you want to meet all three criteria, choose a sunscreen labelled with all three rather than choosing this cream solely for its moisturising texture.27
SPF is not a multiplier for how long you can stay in the sun. Sun intensity changes with the time of day and location, and no sunscreen filters out all UVB rays. Use shade and protective clothing alongside sunscreen, and limit exposure especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A water resistant label states either 40 or 80 minutes of protection while swimming or sweating; neither means waterproof.27
Does it suit oily or sensitive skin?
Clinique positions the UK SPF 25 cream for all skin types, including sensitive skin, particularly when skin feels dehydrated. It is fragrance free, oil free and labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Those features make it a candidate if you want lightweight moisture without fragrance, not a prediction that you will never get irritation or a breakout. For sensitive skin, dermatologists also recommend mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which gives you another option if chemical filters are uncomfortable.25
How do you use the US Sheertint SPF 25?
Clinique tells you to apply Sheertint in the morning directly to clean skin or over a Clinique moisturiser. Squeeze a small amount, warm it between your fingers and apply. That small amount instruction is for applying the tinted moisturiser; general sunscreen guidance still calls for enough product to cover exposed skin completely. The seven shades run from Universal Very Light to Universal Very Deep. For Clinique's virtual shade finder, scan bare skin in good light and remove glasses.6
Sheertint contains hyaluronic acid and activated aloe water and is intended to keep skin hydrated, plumped looking and dewy for 12 hours. It is fragrance free and oil free, with dermatologist, ophthalmologist and allergy testing. Clinique also describes it as sweat and humidity resistant. For swimming or exercise, look specifically for a water resistant sunscreen with a stated 40 or 80 minute duration rather than treating that description as interchangeable.3
Which UK size is better value?
At the listed prices, the UK 30 ml size costs about 97p per ml and the 50 ml size costs 90p per ml. The larger size costs less per ml, so the smaller package's main financial talent is requiring less money upfront. Choose the 30 ml size for a lower initial spend or the 50 ml size for better unit value.5
How should you store it?
Keep sunscreen away from excessive heat and direct sun. Do not use it past its expiry date. Under US sunscreen guidance, a product without an expiry date should be discarded three years after purchase; discard it sooner if you do not know how old it is. Read the directions on your own package, especially when buying a different country's version.7
