When is one application enough?

As general moisturizing guidance, slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night. Drier skin needs more frequent moisturizing, and excessive dryness calls for a moisturizer you can use at least twice daily. That is a reason to adjust your moisturizing routine, not necessarily to add a second hyaluronic acid serum application. If your skin stays comfortable with your existing moisturizer, keep the serum optional. You can keep the routine to a moisturizer if it meets your needs, even if that leaves the bathroom shelf with less to supervise.23

What does hyaluronic acid actually do?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in skin that binds water and helps maintain hydration. Natural production decreases with age, reducing the skin's ability to hold water. In skincare, hyaluronic acid works as a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water. It comes in serums and creams, so a separate serum is not the only way to include it.14

How should I apply a hyaluronic acid serum?

  1. 1Cleanse, then leave your skin damp rather than drying it completely.
  2. 2Apply the amount of serum specified on your product's label.
  3. 3Follow immediately with moisturizer to help keep the captured water from evaporating. In general, layer thin products before thicker creams.
  4. 4For daytime sun protection, use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, alongside shade and protective clothing.

What if my skin still feels dry?

Look at the moisturizer as well as the serum schedule. Moisturizers combine ingredients that attract water, soften skin, and reduce water loss. Occlusive ingredients, such as petrolatum, mineral oil, or dimethicone, form a barrier that slows evaporation. For dry skin, a cream preserves more water than a lotion, and an ointment is more protective still. Choose the texture for your dryness, not for the satisfaction of assembling a complete set. Apply moisturizer after washing while skin is still damp. Adjust the routine when cold weather or indoor heating increases dryness.23

How soon should I notice a difference?

Expect modest hydration benefits: less dryness, a little more fullness, and softer looking fine lines after about a week. Products combining different molecular sizes can improve dryness and roughness within one to two weeks. Hyaluronic acid does not completely reverse skin aging. Judge the routine by improved dryness and comfort, not by expecting a serum to recreate younger skin.1

What if I use acne medication?

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tretinoin, and isotretinoin can dry or irritate skin. Daily moisturizer can help you tolerate these treatments; the useful addition is hydration, not a mandatory extra serum. Choose a moisturizer labeled oil free, noncomedogenic, or "won't clog pores." Noncomedogenic means formulated not to block pores. Apply it after washing, leaving some water on your skin. Hyaluronic acid itself is not an acne treatment.135

When should I change the product or get help?

For dry or sensitive skin, avoid fragranced moisturizers. Moisturizer preservatives and fragrances can trigger contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin reaction; discontinue the product if that develops. If dryness does not improve with moisturizing, or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding, stinging, or very irritating, make an appointment with a dermatologist rather than simply increasing serum use.23
