Is SPF in makeup enough protection?

SPF in makeup is a sun protection claim, not a reason to ignore application directions. In the US, makeup sold for sun protection is both a cosmetic and a drug, so the bottle has more than one job description. The practical question is whether you apply enough of a suitable product and renew that protection during sun exposure.25

Choose a sunscreen labelled broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher. SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays mainly responsible for sunburn; broad spectrum means protection against UVA as well. UVA also contributes to skin ageing, and both UVA and UVB contribute to skin cancer. Look for water resistance too, especially if you will swim or sweat. SPF 50 or higher is a useful choice for extended time outdoors.246

How much foundation with SPF should I apply?

Follow your foundation's sun protection directions rather than choosing an amount only for cosmetic coverage. Achieving the labelled SPF requires approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimetre of skin. That is an application requirement, not a universal number of foundation pumps. Without directions for your particular foundation, there is no single pump count to use.23

For separate sunscreen, practical quantity guides include a nickel sized dollop for the face alone, or one teaspoon for the face and neck together. These cover different areas, so do not treat them as competing measurements. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including your ears and neck, rather than stopping wherever your foundation stops. Use foundation for the finish you want rather than trying to make it do the whole sunscreen shift.237

Should I wear sunscreen under SPF foundation?

  1. 1Choose broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and check its application and water resistance directions.
  2. 2Apply the full sunscreen amount to exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. Cover your face, ears and neck, along with any other uncovered areas.
  3. 3Apply foundation after sunscreen. The same order applies whether or not your foundation carries an SPF number.
  4. 4During sun exposure, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more frequently after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off.

What happens when I need to reapply over makeup?

Wearing foundation does not remove the need to reapply sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen format you can use in the required amount and follow its directions; creams, gels, sticks, powders and sprays are available. Water resistance lasts either 40 or 80 minutes, depending on the label. It does not mean waterproof, and it does not replace reapplication after water exposure or sweating.347

Do I need it on cloudy days?

Cloud cover is not a reliable reason to skip sun protection: UV radiation can still reach your skin. Use sunscreen daily when the UV index is 3 or higher. Exposure changes with season and location, so foundation SPF is not the deciding factor. No sunscreen blocks all UV radiation; shade, a hat and protective clothing remain useful alongside it.36

Sun protection matters for every skin colour. If you take medication, ask your healthcare professional about sun precautions because some medicines increase sun sensitivity. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen formulations tend to be easier to tolerate, though they can look thicker or whiter under makeup.37
