Can losing weight cause stretch marks?
Yes, particularly when weight loss happens quickly. Skin that shrinks or stretches rapidly can damage the connective tissue beneath its surface. Collagen and elastin, the proteins that support skin, can rupture during that abrupt change. Stretch marks develop as the skin heals. On the breasts, weight loss can also reduce collagen and skin elasticity. That explains why stretch marks are possible after weight loss, despite a name that sounds as though stretching is the only option. Having marks does not tell you how much weight you have lost.123
Do stretch marks mean you are gaining weight?
Not necessarily. Rapid weight gain is a common cause because skin expands quickly, but puberty, pregnancy and rapid muscle growth can also cause marks. Stretch marks are also associated with obesity, where mechanical stretching contributes to skin changes. Family history affects your likelihood of developing them, and not everyone gets them after the same physical changes. A mark alone cannot distinguish weight gain from weight loss or a growth spurt. An older mark can remain visible long after the change that caused it.13456
What does their colour tell you?
Colour is more useful for understanding how a mark changes over time than for judging your weight. New marks can be pink, red, purple, reddish brown or dark brown, depending on skin colour. Early marks can feel slightly raised and itchy. As marks mature, their colour fades and they often become slightly sunken. Older marks can look whitish or silver and have a different texture from surrounding skin. Fading happens over time, but marks can remain permanently; becoming paler does not mean you are losing weight.14
What should you do about them?
Stretch marks themselves are harmless, so treatment is optional. Moisturizer can hydrate skin, but cocoa butter has not been shown to prevent stretch marks or reduce their appearance. A cream can moisturize without removing a scar, even when the packaging has bigger ambitions. Avoid tanning to hide marks: they do not tan and can become more noticeable. Sunless self tanner can provide temporary camouflage without removing them.167
If you want treatment, newer marks are easier to improve than older ones. Hyaluronic acid and prescription tretinoin can help make early marks less noticeable. Apply a suitable stretch mark product daily and massage it gently into the skin; visible results take weeks. A tretinoin study used nightly application for 24 weeks, rather than an overnight fix. Dermatologists also offer laser and other procedures to reduce visibility, not erase marks. Laser treatment can discolor darker skin, so discuss that risk before booking.137
Prevention is not always possible. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding sudden weight changes can reduce the chance of developing marks. Creams and massage are not dependable ways to prevent them.36
When should you see a doctor?
Arrange an appointment if new marks appear without a clear cause. Tell the clinician about steroid tablets or cortisone creams you use, because these can contribute. Large marks alongside increased fat around the chest, abdomen or back of the neck, slim limbs or a red, rounded face need assessment for possible Cushing's syndrome, a condition involving excess cortisol. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before treating stretch marks. Do not use retinoid creams during pregnancy.146
