The same sunscreen was previously called Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics. Beauty of Joseon says the formula, ingredients and size are unchanged; the name has had a makeover without the sunscreen having to participate. Both names can appear on packaging during the label change.1

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Niacinamide ingredients

The formula includes rice extract, niacinamide, glycerin, plant extracts and fermented ingredients. Its four sunscreen filters are ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, diethylhexyl butamido triazone and methylene bis benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol. Beauty of Joseon describes a creamy, lightweight texture with a dewy finish. Rice extract helps moisturize, while niacinamide helps support the moisture barrier.1

Is fragrance free the same as unscented?

No. An unscented cosmetic can contain fragrance added to mask the smell of other ingredients without creating a noticeable scent. An unscented label can therefore coexist with fragrance ingredients, because apparently even the absence of a smell needs small print. Relief Sun is specifically labelled fragrance free, rather than merely unscented. For other products, check the ingredient panel rather than deciding by smell alone. Under US cosmetic labelling rules, a fragrance mixture can appear simply as "Fragrance" instead of listing each component separately.12

What if you have sensitive skin or a fragrance allergy?

If fragrance is something you need to avoid, choosing a fragrance free product and checking its ingredients is a sensible starting point. Other cosmetic ingredients can still cause irritation or allergic reactions. Check your tube's ingredient panel against any substances you already know you react to, rather than treating the front label as an allergy checklist. In the US, terms such as "fragrance free", "hypoallergenic" and "for sensitive skin" have no federal standard or definition. If an ingredient is unclear, contact the manufacturer with your specific question.23

An itchy, red rash can be a sign of an allergic reaction to a cosmetic. If you suspect a reaction, seek medical advice and tell the clinician which product you used. A clinician can arrange patch testing to help identify an allergen so you can avoid it in future. This is medical testing, not simply trying sunscreen on a small area at home. Seek immediate medical attention for trouble breathing or swallowing, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness.3

How do you apply Relief Sun?

  1. 1Apply moisturizer first if needed. Beauty of Joseon suggests it for dry, dehydrated or normal skin; oily skin can skip additional moisturizer.
  2. 2Apply Relief Sun generously and evenly over sun exposed areas as the last step of morning skincare.
  3. 3Reapply at least every two hours. Use a water resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.
