How to apply it

Start with clean, dry skin rather than arranging products by how expensive their bottles look. Follow your treatment's directions for where to apply it: an occasional pimple can be spot treated, while some benzoyl peroxide products direct you to cover the entire affected area.123

  1. 1Cleanse gently, remove makeup and pat your skin dry. Avoid scrubbing.
  2. 2Apply a thin layer of benzoyl peroxide to the area specified on your label. Keep it away from your eyes, lips and mouth.
  3. 3Continue with your serum if you are using one, then moisturizer. This sequence is a practical application of the clean, dry skin directions.
  4. 4Apply sunscreen afterward if you are going outside. Wash your hands after applying benzoyl peroxide.

If acne medicines irritate your skin, wait 10 to 15 minutes after washing before applying them. That waiting period is between cleansing and treatment, not a required pause between benzoyl peroxide and serum. Let benzoyl peroxide dry completely before treated skin touches clothing, towels or bedding, because it can bleach fabrics.14

What if your serum also treats acne?

Check whether your serum contains another acne treatment, such as salicylic acid or a retinoid. Using another topical acne medicine alongside benzoyl peroxide increases the chance of dryness and irritation. Changing the order does not resolve that concern. If irritation develops, use only one topical acne medicine at a time rather than trying to make the combination work by rearranging layers.24

Prescription combinations are a separate case: benzoyl peroxide is available combined with adapalene or clindamycin. Follow the instructions for that medicine instead of treating its ingredients as separate routine steps. A plain moisturizer can help with treatment dryness; choose a water based or noncomedogenic option, meaning one intended not to clog pores. The word 'noncomedogenic' is useful shopping guidance, not a signed contract with your pores.14

How often should you use it?

Start slowly rather than repeatedly applying treatment to the same pimple. General benzoyl peroxide guidance starts with every second night, building to once or twice daily as tolerated. Individual labels differ: Rodan & Fields Spotless Acne Clearing Treatment starts with one daily application. Follow your own label, and reduce frequency if dryness or peeling becomes bothersome. Morning use is possible; benzoyl peroxide is not restricted to bedtime.123

Benzoyl peroxide treats mild to moderate acne and targets surface bacteria that aggravate acne. Lower concentrations and wash formulas are less irritating. For sensitive skin, choose a lower concentration, but check the warnings: some products explicitly say not to use them on very sensitive skin. Benzoyl peroxide can be used during pregnancy.1256

What should you expect?

An occasional pimple can benefit from a dab of benzoyl peroxide, but there is no instantaneous fix. For ongoing acne, improvement can take several months. Mild dryness is common. Reduce use if irritation develops, and stop and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe. Seek care for painful or worsening acne, scarring, or acne that has not improved after several months of care and nonprescription treatment.1234

Keep benzoyl peroxide at room temperature or cooler, following its storage instructions. Replace products every 10 to 12 weeks and discard them after exposure to temperatures above 78°F. Replace the cap securely after use.17
