How do you check the label?

An expiration or best before date gives a calendar limit. A period after opening gives the usable time after you first open the product, expressed in months or years. These answer different questions: how long the product lasts, and how long it lasts once opened. An identification or batch number identifies the product; it is not a use by date wearing a disguise.3

Label rules differ by market: ordinary cosmetic lotions do not need an expiration date in the United States, while Great Britain has date labeling requirements with exceptions. Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales.134

  1. 1Read the container and outer packaging for a date, an opening limit and storage instructions.
  2. 2Mark the container with the date you first open it so you can track its age.
  3. 3Check the lotion for changes before using it, rather than relying on the date alone.
  4. 4Follow the label's instructions and discard lotion with changes in color or smell.

How long does opened or unopened lotion last?

There is no single shelf life that fits every body lotion. The formula, how you use it and where you store it affect how long it stays usable. An unopened bottle is not protected from heat or deterioration simply because nobody has used it. If there is no date or opening limit, ask the manufacturer about that specific lotion rather than assigning it a generic number of years.1

Does body lotion go bad?

Yes. Creams and lotions are prone to contamination by microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. Preservatives help extend shelf life, but they can break down over time. Mixtures of oil and water can separate, and products can dry out or change texture. Heat, sunlight and air can also change their color and smell.15

Unexpected separation is a reason to stop and check the product instructions. Some formulations called shake lotions are designed to separate and need shaking before use, so separation is not automatically spoilage for every product. Follow the exact label rather than assuming an ordinary body lotion is meant to behave that way.6

How should you store body lotion?

  • Keep the container clean and tightly closed between uses.
  • Wash your hands before using lotion, especially before dipping fingers into a jar.
  • Protect lotion from temperature extremes and sunlight; do not leave it in a hot car.
  • Avoid warm, damp storage conditions, which can encourage microbial growth.
  • Do not cut open a tube to reach the remaining product: changing the packaging can invalidate its expiry date and increase contamination.

What if the lotion contains SPF?

In the United States, a moisturizer labeled with SPF is both a cosmetic and a drug. These products require stability testing and expiration dates, and manufacturers must ensure safety and effectiveness until expiry. Do not apply the ordinary cosmetic labeling rule to a lotion that also serves as sunscreen.1

Using your replacement lotion

Write the opening date on the new container, because 'I bought it a while ago' is not much of a filing system. For moisturizing, pat your skin until it is no longer dripping but still slightly damp, then apply lotion within three minutes after bathing. Use moisturizer after every bath or shower; it can also be applied at other times when needed.257

If lotion causes a rash, redness, a burn or another unexpected reaction, stop using it and contact a healthcare provider. A reaction does not by itself tell you that lotion has expired: fragrances and preservatives can also cause contact allergy. In the United States, you can report unexpected reactions or product problems to the FDA.25
