Why doesn't my tub have an expiry date?
Ordinary cosmetics sold in the US do not have to carry an expiry date, so the label can be legally quiet on the question you actually have. Manufacturers still have to determine their products' shelf life as part of making sure they are safe. A missing date does not mean the cream lasts indefinitely.3
Look for a small open jar symbol with a number followed by "M". This is the period after opening: the number tells you how many months the product should last once opened. Use the number on your own container rather than borrowing one from another CeraVe product. Write the opening date on the container so you can track that period.2
How long does unopened CeraVe cream last?
For an unopened container without a date, ask CeraVe about that product's shelf life. An opening period is not an unopened shelf life. Storage matters before opening too: heat can break down preservatives, and temperature changes, sunlight and air can affect a cosmetic's colour, texture and smell.1
When should you throw the cream away?
These are general cosmetic spoilage checks, not a CeraVe specific expiry test:
- The smell becomes unpleasant or noticeably different.
- The colour changes.
- The cream separates into different layers.
- The texture becomes unusually runny, dry, flaky or clumpy.
- The product feels different when applied.
Replace a cosmetic when its indicated use period ends, even if some remains; finishing the tub is not a shelf life test. Preservatives can break down over time, allowing bacteria and fungi to grow.12
How should you store CeraVe cream?
Use these general cosmetic storage and handling habits:
- Keep the cream in a clean, dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
- Do not leave the container in a hot car.
- Wash your hands before handling and applying the cream.
- Keep the container clean and close the lid securely after each use.
Dipping fingers into cosmetics adds microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is also available with a pump, so scooping is not a mandatory part of owning a moisturizer.145
What if your CeraVe moisturizer has SPF?
A moisturizer with SPF needs different expiry handling from ordinary moisturizing cream. Throw sunscreen away when it expires because its protective ingredients break down. If there is no expiry date, record the purchase date and replace it after three years. Replace it sooner if the smell, colour or consistency changes, or the product separates.12
