Which ceramides does it contain?
The Daily Moisturizing Lotion formula listed here contains Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6 II and Ceramide 1. These are actual ingredients in the lotion, not just a description on the front of the bottle, which is a better use of ceramides than label decoration.2
CeraVe was developed with dermatologists, not Michael Cera.1
What do the ceramides do?
Ceramides are fats that form part of the skin's natural barrier. Together with cholesterol and fatty acids, they help limit water escaping from the skin and substances entering it. In a moisturizer, ceramides help replenish the fats that support that barrier. That is a different job from simply attracting water to the skin, because apparently moisturizing requires a division of labour.34
What else helps the lotion moisturize?
- Hyaluronic acid attracts hydration to the skin's surface and helps retain moisture.
- Glycerin is a humectant, an ingredient that attracts and binds water.
- Dimethicone helps reduce moisture loss by forming a protective film over the skin.
How should you use it?
CeraVe tells you to apply Daily Moisturizing Lotion liberally as often as needed, or as directed by a physician. Its MVE delivery system releases moisturizing ingredients gradually for 24 hour hydration. That describes moisture delivery, not a deadline for complete barrier repair.2
Is it suitable for dry or sensitive skin?
Daily Moisturizing Lotion is intended for normal to dry skin, has a lightweight, non greasy texture and is fragrance free. It is also accepted by the National Eczema Association. For eczema, ceramides and fragrance free formulas are useful features to look for, but tolerance still matters when choosing a moisturizer. If moisturizing products are not helping eczema symptoms, speak with a dermatologist.25
