Which lip balms need an expiry date?
Cosmetics and medicines follow different labelling rules. The relevant distinction is the product's category and the country where it is sold, which is a surprising amount of jurisdiction for lip balm.1
| Product category | What the date rules mean |
|---|---|
| Ordinary cosmetic balm sold in the US | Cosmetics do not legally need a printed expiry date or a specific shelf life. |
| SPF balm sold in the US | Sunscreen products are drugs, including products that are also cosmetics. Drug expiry dates generally require stability testing. |
| Balm sold as a natural health product in Canada | Each finished natural health product must carry an expiry date and a lot number. |
US drug rules have limited exceptions: an over the counter drug with no dosage limitation can be exempt from carrying an expiry date if testing shows stability for at least three years. That exception is not a universal three year lifespan for lip balm, or permission to count three years from opening.3
Canadian cosmetics must be safe to use and manufactured, packed and stored under sanitary conditions. Do not apply the Canadian natural health product expiry rule to every cosmetic balm simply because both go on your lips.4
How do you check the balm you already own?
- 1Check the label for an expiry date and storage instructions. Use the product's own date rather than a generic lifespan found online.
- 2If an ordinary cosmetic balm has no date, ask the manufacturer about its shelf life. There is no single lifespan that applies to every formula.
- 3Check for changes in smell, colour or texture, including separation, hardening or cracking. Replace a balm that has changed rather than continuing to use it.
A purchase receipt records a shopping trip, not the balm's birthday. For Canadian natural health products, the printed expiry is calculated from the original batch manufacture date, not the packaging date. Buying a new tube does not restart that clock, despite the fresh start implied by a shopping bag.2
What does an expiry date actually mean?
For Canadian natural health products, shelf life covers physical characteristics, purity and the amount and strength of medicinal ingredients under the recommended storage conditions. When no conditions are specified, stability is assessed at room temperature. The date is tied to the tested formula and packaging; changes to either can change shelf life. An unopened product still has a printed expiry, so remaining sealed does not extend it.2
Can poor storage shorten its useful life?
Yes. Keep the container and applicator clean, avoid sharing the balm, and do not leave it in a hot car. Fingers introduce bacteria and fungi into pots. Heat can weaken preservatives and help those organisms grow; moisture, air and sunlight also affect cosmetic shelf life. Follow the label's storage instructions even before the expiry date.1
What if the balm stings but has not expired?
Stop using a balm that burns, stings or feels uncomfortable. Those sensations mean irritation, not that the product is working, and they do not tell you its age. For chapped lips, use a balm that does not irritate several times daily and before bed. Outdoors, use SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. If dry, chapped lips do not improve within two to three weeks of appropriate care, see a dermatologist.5
