An SPF moisturizer combines two jobs in one bottle, which is more useful than giving the bathroom shelf another tenant. It can replace separate morning moisturizer and sunscreen steps, but only if the product meets those protection requirements and you follow its sunscreen directions.13

What should the label say?

Look for both "broad spectrum" and "SPF 30" or higher. SPF describes protection against sunburn, mainly from ultraviolet B rays, or UVB. Broad spectrum adds protection against ultraviolet A rays, or UVA, which contribute to lasting skin damage and wrinkles. An SPF number alone does not tell you that a product protects against both.45

For extended outdoor exposure, choose SPF 50 or higher. For swimming or sweating, choose a product labeled water resistant and check whether its tested protection lasts 40 or 80 minutes in water. No sunscreen is waterproof, including sunscreen sold as moisturizer.24

How do you use SPF moisturizer?

  1. 1Cleanse first. If you use a serum, apply it before your moisturizer.
  2. 2Apply your SPF moisturizer every morning, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Follow the product's label directions.
  3. 3Use approximately a nickel sized amount for the face, spreading it evenly. Cover your ears and neck too, using additional product for those areas. Apply sunscreen to other exposed skin rather than stopping at your face.
  4. 4Reapply every two hours during sun exposure and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. Follow the label's water resistance and reapplication instructions.

The amount matters: applying too little means you do not get the full SPF protection listed on the label. Spread enough product for thorough, even coverage rather than using only what feels sufficient for moisturizing. The face amount is not an allowance for your face, neck, ears and the rest of your body combined.2

When should you use separate sunscreen?

Use separate sunscreen if your moisturizer lacks broad spectrum protection, falls below SPF 30, or is not something you can apply generously and reapply. Apply moisturizer first and sunscreen last in your morning skincare routine. A moisturizer that contains some sunscreen is not automatically enough; judge the protection and directions, not just the product category.16

Makeup with SPF can add protection, but should not replace sunscreen. It also commonly leaves ears and neck uncovered. Daily protection matters on cloudy days and in winter, and sunlight through windows adds exposure even when you spend much of the day indoors. Use shade and protective clothing alongside sunscreen.37

What results should you expect?

Moisturizing can immediately plump the appearance of some fine lines, a less dramatic job than the anti aging aisle tends to advertise. Sun protection has a different purpose: reducing further UV damage rather than waiting for a visible change. Existing UV damage to skin cell DNA cannot be reversed, even though treatments can improve the appearance of sun damaged skin.15

What if your skin is dry or sensitive?

Dry skin often needs a cream rather than a lighter lotion, and fragrance can irritate it. Before using a new product on your face, test a small amount on your inner forearm twice daily for 4 to 5 days. Stop using a nonprescription product that stings or burns. If irritation develops, stop the product and make an appointment with a dermatologist. If you take medication, ask your pharmacist whether it increases sensitivity to sunlight.1567
