Why does damp skin help?
Dry skin develops when skin loses too much water and oil. Cold winter air, hot desert air, heating and air conditioning can all contribute. Indoor heating lowers humidity, so the furnace can warm the room while quietly undoing the bathroom's work. Applying moisturizer after washing helps hold onto water before it evaporates. The useful combination is damp skin plus moisturizer, rather than water alone.13
How to apply moisturizer in dry weather
- 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Keep baths and showers to five to ten minutes, and avoid scrubbing.
- 2Pat with a towel until your skin is no longer dripping, but leave a little water on the surface. Damp means lightly moist, not soaking wet.
- 3Apply moisturizer promptly, ideally within three minutes of getting out of the shower or bath. Gently massage it into dry areas.
- 4Repeat after washing your hands and whenever your skin feels dry. For ongoing dryness, moisturize two to three times a day, or as often as needed.
Use this approach after your morning or evening wash, and after shaving. The useful timing is immediately after washing, while your skin still holds water. You can also apply moisturizer when your skin feels dry between washes; you do not need another shower before every application.24
Which moisturizer should you use?
For very dry skin, choose a cream or ointment rather than a thin lotion. Richer products create a thicker barrier, while watery moisturizers can dry too quickly to offer much relief. A lighter lotion or gel can suit the face unless facial skin is very dry.567
Look for a formula that combines water attracting ingredients with ingredients that limit water loss. Humectants, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, attract and bind water. Occlusives, such as petrolatum and dimethicone, help keep moisture in. Emollients soften and smooth dry skin. Hyaluronic acid can draw water from deeper skin layers as well as humid air, so its role is not limited to collecting moisture from the room.25
What if you have sensitive skin or use treatments?
Choose gentle products labeled fragrance free. Unscented products can still contain masking fragrances that irritate dry, sensitive skin. If you are prone to acne, look for a moisturizer labeled noncomedogenic; heavy oils and petroleum jelly can aggravate breakouts. Introduce one new moisturizer at a time so a reaction is easier to trace. For prescription creams or active treatments, follow your clinician's application instructions: some need to go on before moisturizer. Do not transfer the damp skin rule to those products.24
A humidifier can also reduce the dry air problem. Place a portable unit in your bedroom, clean it regularly to prevent mold, and aim for indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Avoid trying to scrub away dry flakes: excessive exfoliation strips moisture and oils and can make dryness worse.36
When is moisturizer not enough?
Tell a dermatologist if moisturizer causes burning, stinging or irritation. Seek medical advice if dryness and itching persist despite care, disturb your sleep, or leave open cuts or sores from scratching. Persistent dryness can need treatment beyond changing when you apply moisturizer.16
