How does the skin keep water in?

The main water barrier is the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. Its tightly arranged cells sit in a matrix of fats, forming a structure often compared to bricks and mortar. Together, the cells and fats slow the movement of water from inside the body to the outside. The skin's water barrier is a biological function, not an optional upgrade sold with a serum.13

Natural moisturising factors are substances within this layer that help it hold water. Sebum, the oil produced by the skin's oil glands, also prevents excessive water loss. Water escaping through the outer skin layer is called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. A healthy barrier controls that loss rather than stopping it altogether.1

Small amounts of water normally pass through the barrier as vapour, helping with cooling while avoiding major water loss. Sweating provides another way to cool the body, but heavy sweating reduces your body's water level. Extensive burns show how important the barrier is: losing it over a large area can cause excessive water loss and serious dehydration.23

What does dehydration do to your skin?

Body dehydration can cause dry skin and a sunken appearance around the eyes. But dry skin alone does not tell you that your whole body is dehydrated. Skin becomes dry when it loses too much water locally, and low humidity, indoor heating, medicines and skin conditions can all contribute. Indoor heating can leave skin dry and chapped, so a comfortable room is not automatically a skincare amenity.45

The practical distinction is between water loss from the skin and a shortage of water in the body. Dry skin needs help retaining moisture. Body dehydration needs replacement fluids. A moisturizer helps hold water in the skin, which is a smaller job than the word "hydrating" sometimes gets hired to do.25

How can you help dry skin retain water?

  1. 1Keep baths and showers short.
  2. 2Apply moisturizer afterward while your skin is still damp.
  3. 3For very dry skin, use a cream or ointment throughout the day. These generally hold moisture better than lotions.
45

When home care works, dry skin tends to improve within two weeks. Treating dryness strengthens the outer skin layer and can make skin more comfortable and less sensitive. If dryness persists or worsens, see a dermatologist to check for causes beyond dry air, including a skin condition or medication. Dryness caused by those problems can need treatment rather than more moisturizer.5

When does dehydration need more than skincare?

Thirst, dark urine, a dry mouth, headache and dizziness are signs of body dehydration. Drink water regularly throughout the day and respond to thirst promptly. Mild dehydration can usually be treated by drinking more fluids; significant fluid loss from sweating, vomiting or diarrhea can require an electrolyte drink to replace water and salts.2

Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect severe dehydration, particularly with confusion or marked weakness. Infants, children and adults aged 65 or older are at higher risk. Moderate or severe dehydration can require fluids through a vein in a medical setting.2
