Why choose zinc oxide sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both are often recommended for rosacea because they are less likely to irritate sensitive skin. They protect by absorbing and reflecting ultraviolet light. Chemical sunscreens mainly absorb ultraviolet light and can also provide effective protection; the practical choice is a formula you can wear without irritation.23
What should you look for on the bottle?
Look for zinc oxide in the active ingredients, plus SPF 30 or higher, water resistance and broad spectrum protection, meaning protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a formula made for sensitive skin and avoid irritants such as alcohol and fragrance. Zinc oxide is one part of the formula, so the rest of the product matters too.123
Facial sunscreens are often lighter and less greasy than body formulas, so a body sunscreen has not automatically earned a promotion to face care. A thicker body formula can clog pores or irritate facial skin. Cream sunscreens are a useful option for dry skin.23
Some mineral sunscreens leave a white cast, an ambitious finish for a product intended for everyday use. If that puts you off wearing sunscreen, consider a tinted formula that matches your skin tone. Tinted sunscreen can reduce visible white residue; choose it with the same SPF and protection requirements.23
How do you use it?
- 1Apply sunscreen every morning as the final skincare step, after moisturizer. Apply it to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors.
- 2Use at least 1 teaspoon for your face. Cover other exposed areas, including your ears and neck.
- 3Reapply approximately every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating, following the bottle's directions.
Pair sunscreen with shade and protective clothing, including a wide brimmed hat. Limit direct sunlight whenever possible to avoid flares. Water resistance does not mean waterproof, and a higher SPF does not let you wait longer between applications.13
What should you expect?
The useful benefit is reducing exposure to a rosacea trigger, not a promised schedule for clearing redness. Make sunscreen a daily habit and choose another formula if yours irritates your skin. Rosacea treatment needs to be tailored by a physician to your symptoms.12
Does zinc oxide help acne?
For acne prone skin, zinc oxide is an option for sun protection. Protecting skin from the sun can help prevent acne from worsening. If you take isotretinoin, a prescription acne medicine, your skin can become more sensitive to sunlight. Choose a sunscreen labeled noncomedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores, with SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum protection and water resistance. Mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can be helpful when skin is sensitive.4
