Which Dove liquid cleanser should you choose?

Look for a mild cleanser intended for sensitive skin, with an explicit fragrance free label. For skin that is dry or easily irritated, a mild soap free cleanser is a sensible first choice because soap can strip away natural oils. These are general selection rules, not ingredient claims about a particular Dove bottle. A brand name can help you find a shelf, but it cannot do the ingredient reading for you.2

Fragrance free and unscented do not mean the same thing. An unscented product can contain fragrance that masks the smell of other ingredients. For skin that reacts to fragrance, choose fragrance free rather than relying on whether the wash smells of anything.3

Fragrance is not the only factor in how a cleanser feels on sensitive skin. In adults with clinically sensitive skin, a particular mild fragranced foaming facial cleanser was tolerated as well as a gentle fragrance free alternative over three weeks. Mild fragrance free cleansers remain the usual starting choice; that three week result is not a timetable for a Dove wash.4

How to wash without making sensitivity worse

  1. 1Wet your skin with lukewarm water. Avoid very hot water, which removes natural oils and can leave skin dry and itchy.
  2. 2Apply the mild cleanser gently. For sensitive skin during a shower, concentrate cleansing on the areas that need it, rather than automatically washing your entire body with cleanser.
  3. 3Massage the cleanser on and rinse it off. Do not scrub or keep massaging to make the wash work harder.
  4. 4Pat your skin gently with a towel rather than rubbing it dry.
  5. 5Apply a fragrance free moisturizer after washing. For dry skin or nummular eczema, use a cream or ointment on skin that is still damp.

Longer cleansing is not better cleansing: extended massage can break down the fatty layer that helps protect your skin. The goal is to wash and rinse, not give the lather an extended audition.2

How often should you use it?

For body washing, a daily shower is a general starting point, not a requirement to cleanse every inch every day. Activity, weather and skin dryness can change how often you need to shower. Morning or evening is fine. If you shower more than once a day, use cleanser during only one shower to limit drying.56

Keep showers brief, ideally under five minutes. For sensitive or eczema prone skin, concentrate washing on the face, armpits and groin rather than routinely applying cleanser everywhere. That is general bathing guidance, not a direction to use a Dove body wash on your face or genital skin; follow the intended use on the particular bottle.56

If you mean liquid hand wash, the useful follow up is moisturizing after handwashing. For nummular eczema, which causes patches of eczema, apply a fragrance free cream or ointment while your hands are still damp. Remove rings before washing, and moisturize before putting them back on.1

What should you expect from a gentler wash?

The useful change is removing a trigger while keeping skin clean. Sensitive skin usually settles when the irritant is removed and the skin has time to calm down. A cleanser does not replace moisturizer: moisturizing helps keep water in the skin and supports the skin barrier, the protective outer layer. A wash is the cleansing step, not an entire skincare routine squeezed into one bottle.57

When should you stop using the wash?

Stop using a wash that triggers burning, stinging, itching, a rash or worsening dryness. Sensitive skin can cause symptoms you feel without visible redness, so a normal looking surface is not a reason to ignore discomfort. Note when the symptoms started and which products touched your skin to help identify the trigger.7

See a healthcare professional if symptoms are very bothersome or do not improve after about a week of avoiding triggers and using gentle care. Persistent sensitivity can be linked to eczema, contact dermatitis or other skin conditions. If you already have a diagnosed skin condition, choose cleansing care alongside its treatment rather than treating a new wash as the treatment itself.27
