What is in Protini?
Peptides are short strings of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Protini combines its nine signal peptides with amino acids, pygmy waterlily extract and a folic acid ferment extract. The ingredient list also includes glycerin, sodium hyaluronate and marula seed oil. Drunk Elephant describes the peptide complex as binding moisture to skin to help it look plumper and firmer.14
The formula has a pH of 4.0 and is free of essential oils, silicones, fragrance, dyes and solvent alcohols. It does contain cetearyl alcohol, so the solvent alcohol exclusion is specific, not a claim that every ingredient with alcohol in its name is absent.1
What results can you expect?
The most immediate benefit to expect is moisture and a plumper appearance. A good moisturizer can temporarily make fine lines and wrinkles less noticeable; continued daily application maintains that benefit. Firming creams produce subtle results at best and cannot lift sagging skin, which is rather more work than a jar can take on.3
Drunk Elephant reports an eight week clinical study involving 31 people. After eight weeks, 96% showed improvement in tone, radiance and luminosity, 93% in texture, and 90% in hydration. Eight weeks is a useful checkpoint for assessing visible changes, rather than expecting the full result from the first application.2
Topical peptides have shown promising early results for fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity and texture. Their ability to reach deeper skin in a stable form remains a practical limitation, and clinical evidence for their effectiveness is often weak. Peptide absorption depends partly on the molecule and the formulation, including how it interacts with other ingredients. A peptide count is not a performance score, even if nine looks pleasingly official.56
Peptides can help reduce inflammation, but they are only one part of a moisturizer's formula. The complete combination of ingredients matters more than the presence of a fashionable ingredient. Choose Protini for the moisturizer as a whole, not on the assumption that peptides alone explain every visible improvement.4
How do you use Protini?
- 1Start with a clean, dry face.
- 2Apply Protini in the morning and again at night. Drunk Elephant allows daily use or rotation with its other moisturizers.
- 3For daytime protection, use a separate sunscreen offering broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance.
- 4Reapply sunscreen every two hours while outdoors.
Can you use Protini with vitamin C or retinol?
Yes. Drunk Elephant allows Protini with vitamin C and specifically permits mixing it with C Firma. The brand also permits using or mixing Protini with its A Passioni and A Gloei retinol treatments, and with any Drunk Elephant serum, treatment or cream. Those mixing directions are specific to the brand's products; prescription treatments need their own directions.2
Who should consider it?
Protini is a reasonable option if you want a lightweight moisturizer and your main cosmetic concern is loss of firmness or elasticity. Sensitive or acne prone skin needs more than a preferred texture: choose products formulated for your skin type. Fragrance exclusion and dermatologist testing do not make Protini suitable for every face.17
Avoid introducing several new products for signs of aging within a few days or weeks, because that can irritate skin. Give moisturizer and sunscreen a few weeks before deciding which remaining concern needs another product. If choosing between peptides and other ingredients is becoming expensive guesswork, a dermatologist can help you select an approach for that concern.47
Protini, Lala Retro or Bora Barrier?
| Moisturizer | Texture | Featured ingredients | Main focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protini | Lightweight gel cream | Nine signal peptides and pygmy waterlily | Firmness and elasticity |
| Lala Retro | Airy whipped cream | Three ceramides and five African oils | Dryness |
| Bora Barrier | Buttery, very rich cream | Six butterlipid complex, zinc and copper gluconates | Chronic dryness and redness |
Choose Protini for the lighter texture and firmness focus, Lala Retro for a whipped moisturizer focused on dryness, or Bora Barrier for a much richer option aimed at chronic dryness. All three can be used day or night.1
Is Protini worth the price?
The standard 50 ml Protini is listed at $72. Other formats include 15 ml, 100 ml and a 50 ml refill. The refill offers another way to buy the moisturizer, not another level of firmness.2
Protini makes sense if its texture, formula and price fit what you want from a daily moisturizer. Effective products for signs of aging exist at every price level. Peptides are optional, and hyaluronic acid or retinoid products can be less expensive alternatives. Sunscreen and moisturizer remain the starting point; paying more for a peptide cream should not displace either.47
