How long does shea butter last?

For plain shea butter, packaging and storage conditions matter. In freshly produced shea butter stored for two months in hot, humid conditions, microbial counts increased and chemical measures of quality changed. Yeasts and moulds were detected after 30 days in all the stored samples. Those timings are a reason to take storage seriously, not a universal expiry date for a retail jar.2

Packaging also affected the results: a woven basket lined with jute performed worst for maintaining quality. Some samples in plastic bags had high yeast and mould counts after 60 days, too. A container is part of storage protection, not just somewhere to print the word 'natural'.2

A cream containing shea butter needs its own shelf life information rather than a deadline borrowed from plain butter. Creams that mix water and oil can separate, and preservatives can break down over time. The word 'shea' on the jar does not give the rest of the formula the day off.1

How should you store shea butter?

  • Keep the container and any applicator clean. Dipping fingers into cosmetics introduces bacteria and fungi.
  • Keep the product away from heat, including a hot car. Heat can speed microbial growth and break down preservatives.
  • Avoid sunlight and repeated temperature changes, which can alter colour, texture and smell.
  • Protect the product from moisture. A damp bathroom can make it easier for bacteria and fungi to grow.

What if the smell or texture changes?

Treat a new smell, colour change, separation, or hardening and cracking as a reason to stop using the product and ask the manufacturer about replacement. These are changes associated with cosmetic deterioration; a calendar date is not the only thing to check.1

What if there is no expiry date?

US cosmetics do not have to carry an expiry date, but manufacturers are responsible for determining shelf life and product safety. If your jar gives no timing information, ask the brand how long that exact product should be kept and used after opening.1
