The French SA cleanser explicitly allows this schedule, while the US Renewing SA Cleanser gives no daily frequency, so treat it as general guidance and follow your bottle's directions. CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser is a separate product with its own instructions.123

Do I need to use it for every wash?

No. Washing your face and using an exfoliating cleanser are not the same decision. General cleansing guidance is morning, evening and after heavy sweating, but that does not mean every wash needs salicylic acid. Choose a cleanser suited to your skin for the other washes rather than increasing SA applications automatically. A cleanser removes dirt and oil, which is a more useful job than most of the words on a skincare bottle.4

If washing leaves your skin uncomfortable, tight or dry, reconsider the frequency and cleanser rather than washing more. Frequent cleansing can remove moisture, and aggressive scrubbing can cause redness or irritation. If you cannot find a comfortable routine, a dermatologist can help choose a cleanser and frequency for your skin.4

How to use CeraVe SA Cleanser

  1. 1Wet your skin with lukewarm water.
  2. 2Massage the cleanser gently in circular motions using your fingertips. Avoid the eye area.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly. If cleanser gets into your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  4. 4Pat dry with a clean, soft towel rather than rubbing.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer after cleansing, and use sunscreen during the day.

You can use the US Renewing SA Cleanser in the morning or evening, on the face or body. Massage and rinse it off rather than treating it as a leave on exfoliant. Use lukewarm rather than very hot water, including in the shower, because hot water can strip oils and worsen dryness.124

What should I expect from regular use?

The US Renewing SA Cleanser is intended for normal and acne prone skin. Salicylic acid helps remove dead surface cells and soften rough skin; the formula also contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to support the skin barrier and moisture. The French SA cleanser is intended for dry, rough and flaky skin, including sensitive skin. Pick the schedule by comfort, not by how much exfoliation you can fit into a day.12

What if my bottle says Acne Control Cleanser?

Renewing SA Cleanser and Acne Control Cleanser are different products, despite names that turn checking the bottle into a small administrative task.3

For the Acne Control Cleanser label, new users should test a small area once daily for three days. Start full use once daily, then increase gradually if needed. Reduce to once daily or every other day if dryness or peeling occurs. Using another topical acne product alongside it increases the risk of irritation and dryness; if irritation occurs, use only one product at a time. Ask a doctor before using it for severe acne.3
