Why does skin look dull?

Dry skin has a dull, rough or scaly surface because its outer layer lacks moisture. Tightness after washing, flaking and itching are useful clues that dryness needs attention. Dead skin cells can also dull the complexion and make the surface look uneven. Skin naturally sheds these cells, but that process slows with age. These are different problems: rough, tight skin needs moisture, while accumulated surface cells are what exfoliation removes. Scrubbing harder is not a substitute for deciding which problem you are trying to address.256

Build your daily routine in this order

  1. 1Wash gently when you wake up, before bed and after sweating. Wet your face with warm water, apply a mild cleanser with your fingertips, rinse completely and pat dry with a clean towel. Do not scrub.
  2. 2Apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Use a cream, lotion or ointment that you tolerate, and apply more whenever dryness returns. For dry skin, moisturizing 2 to 3 times a day, or as needed, helps restore moisture.
  3. 3Apply sunscreen before going outdoors each day. Choose broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance. Cover exposed skin, including your face, neck and ears.
  4. 4At bedtime, remove makeup and daily grime with gentle cleansing, then moisturize. If you choose a toner, use it after cleansing and before moisturizer.

The bedtime wash removes makeup and daily grime, neither of which needs an overnight booking.1

If your skin is dry, fix that first

Moisturizers help reduce water loss and support the skin's protective barrier. They work best on damp skin, so apply yours shortly after washing rather than waiting until your face feels tight. The drier the skin, the thicker the moisturizer should be. Choose by the severity of your dryness, comfort, cost and availability. Moisturizer addresses dryness, which is a less dramatic job than the word "radiance" suggests. Moisturizers containing ceramides are an option for dry skin.25

Check what is drying your skin out. Long, hot showers, soaps and detergents, dry winter air, heating and air conditioning can all contribute. Keep baths and showers warm rather than hot, and limit them to 5 to 10 minutes. Replace regular soap with a gentle cleanser. For dry skin, avoid products containing alcohol, fragrance or dyes. A humidifier can help in winter. Dryness can improve when contributing factors are controlled, although some people have a lasting tendency to dry skin.25

Should you exfoliate dull skin?

Exfoliation removes dead cells from the outer skin layer. Mechanical methods use a scrub, brush, sponge or similar tool; chemical methods use acids to dissolve those cells. Alpha or beta hydroxy acid cleansers are one option for removing dead cells and evening skin tone. Stronger professional treatments include chemical peels and mechanical procedures. A dermatologist can help choose a treatment for your concern; a professional peel is not the same as an everyday cleanser.36

Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin often tolerates mild chemical exfoliation better than abrasive methods. Oily, thicker skin can tolerate stronger methods. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you have darker skin or develop dark spots after inflammation, because it can increase pigmentation. Retinol, prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can already make skin sensitive or peel; adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts.3

Be gentle with scrubs: use small circular motions for about 30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water. Use short, light strokes with a brush or sponge, and moisturize afterward. Never exfoliate sunburned skin or open cuts. Frequency depends on your skin and the method; stronger exfoliation needs less frequent use. Stop exfoliating if your skin becomes red or irritated rather than increasing the frequency to chase brightness.3

Would a brightening toner help?

A toner is an extra option for dull skin, not a compulsory admission fee to a skincare routine. For dullness, options include formulas containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids, niacinamide, licorice root or papaya extracts. Some toners also contain glycerin or hyaluronic acid to increase hydration. Choose the formula for the concern you actually have: an exfoliating toner and a hydrating toner are not interchangeable jobs. Sensitive skin should avoid heavily fragranced formulas and those with lots of dyes or preservatives.4

Gently swipe or spray toner onto your face after cleansing, without rinsing it off, then apply moisturizer. Toners can be used once or twice daily, but a formula with strong acids or potentially irritating actives can start every other day. Adjust use to your skin's tolerance and the other products in your routine. If you use prescription products for rosacea, be cautious about adding another product that your skin needs to tolerate.4

Protect your skin instead of tanning for a glow

Tanning outdoors or indoors prematurely ages skin and increases skin cancer risk. Sunscreen helps slow skin aging, but use shade and protective clothing too. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays. On UK labels, look for SPF 30 or higher and at least 4 star UVA protection, or the UVA circle marking. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours outdoors and after swimming, towel drying or sweating. Applying too little reduces protection. If you will be outside long enough to risk burning, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before leaving and again just before going out.17

How long does brightening take?

For toner, visible effects usually take six weeks to three months, and the improvement can be subtle. Toners targeting hyperpigmentation, meaning dark patches, can take about two to three months. Dry skin care has a different goal: restoring moisture and reducing roughness, flaking and tightness. Judge that part of your routine by whether those symptoms ease, rather than expecting every brightening step to work on the same timetable.24

When should you see a dermatologist?

Get medical advice if dryness and itching do not improve with home care, disturb your sleep, or lead to open sores from scratching. Itching without a visible rash also needs assessment. A dermatologist can help if you cannot tell whether exfoliation suits your skin. Have a spot checked if it differs from others, changes, itches or bleeds; do not treat a changing patch as ordinary dullness.123
