What facial eczema can look like

Facial eczema often causes itchy, dry, flaky patches, most commonly on the cheeks. Eczema can resemble other skin conditions, so a clinician can examine a new or uncertain rash instead of guessing from appearance alone. Eczema has no cure, but treatment can control symptoms. A flare can take several weeks to clear, and eczema can return.34

Build a daily routine

  1. 1Wash with lukewarm water and a mild unscented bar soap or a non soap cleanser. Keep baths or showers warm and short, about five to ten minutes. The bathroom does not need an extended edition.
  2. 2Pat skin dry rather than rubbing. Apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp, right after washing or bathing.
  3. 3Choose fragrance free products rather than unscented ones. An unscented label can hide fragrance; the wording creates a tiny semantic fog.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer at least three to four times daily, and again after washing or when skin feels dry.
  5. 5Test a new product first on a small patch on the inside of your arm, once a day for seven to ten days. If your skin stays clear through the test, you can use the product.

Reduce the triggers you can identify

Triggers differ from person to person. Common facial triggers include makeup and skin care products, soaps and detergents, and dry weather. Avoid products or conditions you identify as a trigger. Hormonal changes, including pregnancy, can also worsen atopic eczema.456

When skin care is not enough

A clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid cream or ointment, or a calcineurin inhibitor applied to the skin. These medicines reduce inflammation, but the right choice depends on your situation, so ask the prescriber how often to use it and what reactions to watch for. Do not increase the amount or frequency on your own. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after several weeks, ask a clinician to review the plan.23

When to get medical care

  • Arrange a medical review if the rash gets worse, does not improve after several weeks, or a moisturizer or topical medicine causes a rash or pain.
  • Seek urgent care if the skin becomes blistered, crusty, or starts leaking fluid; becomes painful, swollen, or warm; suddenly gets worse or bigger; or you feel generally unwell.

Best moisturizers for facial eczema

Look for a gentle, fragrance free and dye free moisturizer. Creams and ointments can include petroleum jelly or mineral oil. Creams suit daytime use, while an ointment can be a better fit for very dry patches. Lotions are less moisturizing, so they are not the first choice for very dry facial skin.35

TypeTexture and use
CreamNot very greasy and suited to daytime use.
OintmentGreasy and thick for very dry skin; discretion is not the assignment.
LotionLess moisturizing than a cream or ointment.
