How to apply your neck cream

  1. 1Cleanse gently. After a shower or washing, pat your neck rather than rubbing it dry. For moisturizing alone, apply the cream while your skin is still slightly damp to help trap water.
  2. 2Apply any skin medication or treatment in its appropriate place. In a general skincare routine, treatment comes after cleansing and before moisturizer. Follow separate prescription instructions where applicable.
  3. 3Smooth the cream gently over your neck in the direction your hair grows. Do not vigorously rub it into the skin.
  4. 4If the cream comes in a pot, remove it with a clean spoon or spatula to reduce contamination.
  5. 5Include broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher in your daytime routine. Use shade and protective clothing as well.

A neck cream belongs in the moisturizer step, not in a separate ceremony for the neck. Avoid adding several anti aging products at once: using too many can irritate skin and make signs of aging more noticeable.1

Should you use it morning or night?

For general moisturizing, either daytime or nighttime application can fit your routine. Slightly dry skin may only need a light moisturizer at night, while more severe dryness needs more frequent moisturizing. Applying moisturizer immediately after bathing helps retain water in the skin. Let the product's directions determine how often you use your particular Dr. Melaxin cream rather than borrowing a frequent application schedule intended for plain emollients, which are moisturizing treatments.4

What should you expect?

Moisturizers add moisture, soften skin and help reduce water loss. They can also disguise fine lines, which makes "disguise" a more useful word than a grand promise. Think of moisturizing as ongoing care rather than a one time application: regular use helps maintain the benefit. There is no established Dr. Melaxin firming or wrinkle improvement timeline to give here, so do not use a promised number of days as a reason to apply more cream.4

What if your neck is sensitive?

Fragrance can irritate dry skin. If you have a known fragrance allergy, avoid products containing fragrance and check the ingredient list rather than relying on how the cream smells. An allergic reaction can appear within hours or after a day or two, with redness, itching, dryness or swelling. If you suspect fragrance allergy, speak with a doctor before trying a home application test; a dermatologist can investigate suspected allergy with patch testing.245

Can you use it with prescription creams?

If you use a steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition on your neck, ask your doctor which product should go first. General emollient guidance is to leave 20 to 30 minutes between moisturizer and that treatment to avoid diluting it or spreading it onto areas that do not need treatment.3

When should you stop?

Stop using the cream if an allergic skin rash develops. Seek advice from a pharmacist or clinician for persistent burning or stinging, inflamed hair follicles or worsening breakouts. Make a dermatologist appointment if dryness becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating, or does not improve with moisturizing.234
