Why do spots contain bacteria if acne is not contagious?
Acne starts when a hair follicle becomes blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells. A follicle is the small opening where a hair grows. Bacteria can grow inside that blockage and contribute to inflammation and pus. Bacteria being involved does not make acne a condition you catch through contact. Hormone changes, greasy skin or hair products, certain medicines, heavy sweating and rubbing the skin can all contribute to breakouts.34
Can acne spread from your back to your chest?
Inflammatory acne does not spread from one body area to another. The same factors that caused one breakout can cause spots elsewhere, so new chest spots alongside back acne do not mean the first patch infected the second. Picking or squeezing is different: it can push material deeper into the skin, increase inflammation and cause additional blemishes, infection or scars.1
What should you do about body acne?
A mild cleanser belongs in the routine, even if its packaging lacks a dramatic before photo.4
- 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid repeated washing and scrubbing; washing affected areas more than twice daily can irritate skin.
- 2After exercise, shower as soon as possible because sweat can irritate acne. During a workout, gently pat sweat away with a clean towel rather than rubbing.
- 3Wear loose, breathable clothing, especially when exercising or sweating.
- 4For mild acne, ask a pharmacist about a treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Follow the product directions carefully and apply it sparingly.
- 5If your skin feels dry, use a moisturizer made for acne prone skin. Leave spots alone rather than picking or squeezing them.
The useful words on a skincare label are "noncomedogenic" or "won't clog pores", not a speech about a fresh start. Noncomedogenic products are less likely to block pores and cause breakouts in most people.6
How long does treatment take?
Use the same treatment for 6 to 8 weeks to look for improvement rather than changing products every week. Complete clearing generally takes 3 to 4 months. Acne treatments can cause redness, dryness or excessive peeling, and benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and clothing. Deep, painful acne often needs a dermatologist's help rather than more products from the shop.246
When should a doctor check the bumps?
See a doctor if you have lots of spots, deep or painful lumps, scarring, worsening acne, or breakouts that are not improving with treatment. Get medical help for hot, swollen, red skin that could indicate infection; redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin. Acne affecting your mental health is also a reason to seek help.34
Painful boils that last for weeks and repeatedly return in the armpits, groin or under the breasts need assessment. One possible cause is hidradenitis suppurativa, also called acne inversa. This condition involves the body's inflammatory response attacking hair follicles, not an infection passed between people. It is not contagious or caused by poor hygiene.7
