What does dimethicone do?
Dimethicone is a silicone. In a barrier repair cream, it creates a protective barrier against irritation while allowing skin to breathe. That makes it a useful option for dyshidrotic eczema, a condition that leaves skin extremely dry. The purpose of that cream is protection and moisture, not replacing treatment prescribed by a dermatologist.12
Does dimethicone make any product suitable?
Choose the finished formula, not just one ingredient, because dimethicone is not a reference letter for the rest of the bottle. For rosacea, look for products marked for sensitive skin and noncomedogenic, meaning they will not clog pores. Choose fragrance free rather than unscented products. A cream is preferable to a lotion or gel. These are product selection principles, not a promise that every dimethicone product will suit your skin.2
How should you use a product containing dimethicone?
- 1Choose the product for its purpose. For dyshidrotic eczema, a dermatologist can recommend a dimethicone containing barrier repair cream.
- 2Test a new skincare product before applying it to your face, especially if products often sting or irritate your skin.
- 3Apply moisturizer after cleansing. If you use rosacea medication, apply the medication first, then moisturizer. For rosacea, let your face dry before moisturizing to reduce burning or stinging.
- 4For dyshidrotic eczema, apply moisturizer or barrier repair cream after washing and whenever skin feels dry. Follow the product's directions for its intended use.
Does FDA approval settle the question?
Most cosmetic ingredients and finished cosmetics do not need FDA approval before sale. They must still be safe under labeled or customary conditions of use, and the companies selling them are legally responsible for their safety. A cosmetic's presence on a shelf is not an FDA approval badge, even if the packaging looks ready for an awards ceremony.3
What if the product irritates your skin?
Avoid a product that irritates your skin or causes an allergic reaction. If you cannot work out the trigger, a dermatologist can help identify what to avoid through testing. For rosacea, ask for product recommendations if finding gentle skincare remains difficult.12
